BOSTON, April 28, 2008 — The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) has been recognized for its "outstanding professional development process, and more specifically for the culture of apprenticeship the company has created around development of its employees" by the Great Place to Work® Institute (GPTW), which recently presented the award.
The Great Place to Work® Awards recognize organizations that have implemented "creative and effective approaches to developing trust, pride, and camaraderie within their unique workplaces," said GPWI, which also produces the rankings for FORTUNE's annual "100 Best Companies to Work For" list. BCG, which has been ranked near the top of that list for the past three years, was one of five companies to receive the award this year and the only one to receive it in the category of professional development.
In a letter informing BCG of its selection, GPWI's Jane Weiss praised the firm's apprenticeship culture: "Far from a traditional training process, development at BCG involves pairing junior consultants with more senior consultants both at BCG and at client sites, which allows people to learn on the job through experience and observation: framing issues, weighing options, and finally discovering unseen answers or approaches to challenging situations."
The award was presented at GPWI's annual conference in St. Louis on April 2, 2008. Each of the five award-winning companies were featured during breakout sessions highlighting their best practices.
"BCG believes that apprenticeship pays back in many multiples, and we're pleased this award recognizes that," said Kermit King, BCG's senior partner responsible for recruiting in the Americas. "Our people arrive bright and driven. We help them become insightful and impactful, which is necessary to advise great companies-or to lead one."
