Philadelphia founded in 2007

Overview

BCG opened its Philadelphia office in October of 2007 to better serve companies in the area and to offer an attractive location for our team and future employees.

Philadelphia, or the City of Brotherly Love, is located in the scenic Delaware Valley and is the home of historical Independence Mall, where you will find the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross's house and the New Constitution Center—along with fine dining and famous Philly cheese steaks. The city is also conveniently located near the New Jersey and Delaware beaches and is only a two-hour drive from the state capital of Harrisburg. Four major professional sports teams—76ers, Phillies, Flyers, and Eagles—have homes in the area.

The Philadelphia office works closely with the Washington, D.C. and the New York offices to support clients in and outside Philadelphia. Recent clients of Philadelphia staff include companies in consumer goods, retail, healthcare, financial services, and education. The range of work includes general strategy, mergers, large-scale corporate transformation, vendor strategy, and management.

Over forty Fortune 1000 companies, several large divisions of multinationals, and a number of large private companies are located within an hour's drive of Philadelphia. BCG has had significant clients in this market, and the location of the office will allow us to deepen our relationships with them and extend our services to others.

BCG's Philadelphia staff comes from diverse backgrounds. Their training and experience include both M.B.A. and Ph.D. programs as well as positions in corporate America. They are from countries throughout the world, including China, Australia, Korea, India, and the United States. It is an exciting time for all of us as we participate in the first steps the Philadelphia office takes and we look forward to being a part of its growth in the coming years.

Client Impact
  • Retailer merchandising transformation—Our client faced an unprecedented threat from a new-to-the-market, world-class competitor. Despite our client's dominant market share and national presence, the organization had not historically leveraged its scale to maximize competitive advantage. BCG helped the company design and implement a new centralized merchandising organization and the core business processes to support it. We partnered closely with them to lead the organization through the change process from start to finish, leveraging core organizational and process redesign principles. The business is beginning to capitalize by improving their cost position and, in a more coordinated and consistent way, their offering to their consumers.
  • Industrial goods performance improvement—Our distributor client was facing low market growth, high product line churn, and low return on capital. By combining a full review of customer dissatisfactions by segment and an analysis of the performance of the supply chain from suppliers forward, we were able to jointly identify a set of programs that created a profitable growth path. Service levels went up, while inventory and operating costs went down.
