Change

"Change" is the word used to describe the transition that occurs from "same" to "different". Ancient Greek philosophy tells of disputes between philosophers about the existence of change. While Heraclitus saw change as ever-present and all-encompassing, Parmenides virtually denied its existence. Today, most people would not deny the existence but the benefit of change. Needs to change in political, economic or social reform are seen as a threat to the future and a loss of privileges rather than the possibility of a new start with improved opportunities.

Plato's Allegory of the Cave explains the nature of truth and perceptions. The allegory is a powerful strategic device – it forces us to reimagine the world and to change our thinking about the things we have never questioned before.

The medieval knights, for centuries the symbols of strength and power,  did not question their invincibility. All this ended with the invention of the crossbow and other archery weapons – the change in weapon technology made the knights Fatally Antiquated Knights.

Berlin was often named as the capital of change, and a song by German rock band Scorpions with the title Wind of Change was inspired by the fall of the Berlin Wall. Read Berlin: Time and Place Condensed to see the different faces of a city.
