Undernutrition is the leading cause of death among children. Every year, more than 3 million children under the age of 5 die of undernourishment—6 times more than die from malaria and HIV combined.
Fighting hunger requires effective collaboration across many different players. REACH is a solution-focused partnership initiated by World Food Programme, Unicef, World Health Organization, and the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization. It supports a country-led, coordinated approach that scales up proven and effective interventions.
Since 2007, BCG has supported REACH in designing effective collaboration approaches. In Mauritania, BCG has helped REACH catalyze action across multiple stakeholders to fight hunger in two of the hardest-hit regions in the country's southeast. Consequently, the coalition has delivered a set of interventions to more than 100,000 children and more than 300,000 women in these regions over a period of four years.
Significant impact has been achieved and confirmed by an independent evaluation team: the percentage of underweight children under 5 in these two regions dropped significantly from 40% in 2008 to 25% at the end of 2013, avoiding countless deaths and dramatically improving the lives of more than 15,000 children.
In a 2014 World Economic Forum ranking of countries by performance in math and science education, South Africa came in at 148 of 148 nations assessed. Despite spending a high share of its GDP on education, the country struggles with teacher and education quality—a challenge that translates into high unemployment and high numbers of unfilled skilled jobs.
The Maths Centre targets the heart of the problem in South Africa by focusing on teacher training and mentoring as well as on the development of high-quality learning materials. The nonprofit partners with corporations to fund and roll out projects throughout the country. Many of these projects have delivered significant impact, boosting teacher performance by 38%, for example, and raising math performance among 10th and 11th graders by 100% and 212%, respectively.
BCG has partnered with the Maths Centre to help the organization refine its mission and strategy and develop its marketing strategy and materials. We are also collaborating to formulate a sustainable fund-raising strategy and to help improve the operating model for its trainer recruiting and development.
