As a firm that always helps clients find ways to improve their operations, BCG is keenly focused on the quality of its own work environment. Year after year, we are recognized as one of the best places to work, and with the introduction of PTO (Predictability, Teaming, and Open Communication), we are striving to become even better.
PTO challenges the accepted consulting industry norms for work-life balance. It is a solution we arrived at through a partnership with Harvard Business School to analyze our work methods and conduct detailed observations of our case teams.
The result is a ground-breaking approach to case team management that allows us to deliver superior client value while also creating greater employee sustainability. And because it is a part of our day-to-day process, we are able to work smarter, ensure the maximum client impact, and also create a more rewarding experience for our people.
PTO is applicable to all consulting staff, and it holistically addresses the way we work through its three core elements:
Predictability. Ensuring that each team member has predictable units of time off incorporated into projects, giving our people more control of their personal lives
Teaming. A strong focus on collaboration, so that each person feels responsible for everyone else receiving his or her personal time.
Open Communication. A constant dialogue about how we work—including check-ins with a dedicated PTO facilitator—to ensure that all key issues are on the table and allow us to incorporate the predictable units of time off into the project.
