Kelsey Is an Insightful Storyteller

Project Leader, Minneapolis

At BCG, Storytellers synthesize complex information and ideas. They believe in bringing the whole team together to get a broader perspective. Kelsey finds clarity in a complex world.

The best part of working at BCG is the people I meet. Whether it's the clients, my case team, or the wider BCG network, I'm continuously motivated and challenged by the diverse outlook and set of experiences everyone brings to the table.

Kelsey

In Kelsey’s Words

I came into BCG straight out of university, knowing very little about how the "business world" worked but with a great curiosity to see and learn as much as I could. Like many, I expected to be here at most two years; I wanted to build up my personal skill set and figure out where I wanted to end up.

Somehow it's more than seven years later, as well as two offices, three cities, and a three-year leave of absence later, and I'm still with BCG. Nothing else I've seen or explored offers the same exposure to business problems and business leaders, nor the same opportunity to make an impact. The learning curve has not flattened—just when I think I have this job figured out, a new role, a new industry, or a new function changes everything and keeps me continuously challenged and engaged.

About Kelsey

Kelsey completed her undergrad in the Huntsman Program at the University of Pennsylvania, studying business and international relations, and holds an MBA from London Business School.

Q&A

Q: What is a typical day like for you?

A: There is no typical day at BCG—in fact, that's one of my favorite things about the job. The variety keeps me engaged and energized, and I enjoy never quite knowing what the day will hold. That said, I normally start my day looking through what the team sent over from the day before and making sure I'm up to speed on the team's work and findings. As a project leader, I look at the big picture, making sure the team is working on the issue holistically and that all logistics are running smoothly. I then spend my day with the team, discussing any issues they're facing, and with clients, building buy-in for our solutions. Then I'm home to make dinner and hopefully some down time!

Q: If you weren’t working at BCG, what would you be doing?

A: I would probably be working somehow in food or wine. I attended culinary school and have also taken some sommelier classes—I love cooking, entertaining people, and making sure everyone is enjoying themselves. My passion definitely lies in that direction; however, I always wonder if having to cook and entertain would take the fun out of it and make it into a job. Luckily at BCG, we work with a large number of food, beverage, and hospitality companies, so I've gotten to immerse myself in the industry while remaining distant enough to still enjoy it!

Q: How have you benefited from a mentoring relationship at BCG?

A: I can truly say that I would not still be at BCG without the mentors I have today. My mentors provide guidance on my career, my current case, and office or staffing issues. But more than that, they are a sounding board for my wider plans and inspiration for how to be successful not only at BCG but in life. The power of having someone say "I believe in you and your career here" cannot be understated; it gives me space to make mistakes and learn, and the motivation to push through even hard times.
