In Takeshi’s Words

I joined BCG after spending more than ten years in the public sector focusing on African development. To me, BCG is a great platform that allows me to follow my passion. I received full support when I requested a transfer from the Tokyo office to the Johannesburg office to continue my journey in Africa. Three years have passed since I moved to South Africa with my family, and now I feel that I am doing exactly what I wanted—helping Japanese companies become more successful in Africa and supporting African public sector players in providing better services to its people.

The speed and quality of learning at BCG is just beyond description. My learning curve remains as steep as it was during my first year at BCG. And more important, I have quality time with my family to enjoy a great life in South Africa that offers amazing diversity and great nature.

About Takeshi

Takeshi holds a master’s in public administration from Harvard Kennedy School. He has more than seven years of professional experience in Africa.

Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?

A: First, BCGers are open. There are no walls or ceiling when we discuss internally. Seniority does not matter as long as your inputs are relevant. We are also open to clients, always willing to have candid discussions. Second, BCGers are curious. We have a genuine interest in solving problems and challenging the status quo. Finally, BCGers are responsible. We are committed to delivering high-quality outputs for clients under any circumstances.

Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?

A: My transfer experience from Tokyo to Johannesburg. I originally joined BCG in Tokyo in 2011 and moved to Johannesburg with my family in 2013 to follow my passion in Africa. I have enjoyed the changes quite a bit. The BCG Johannesburg office is ten times smaller than the Tokyo office and has a start-up-like culture with an entrepreneurial mind-set. Also we as a family love our life in South Africa—its extremely diversified culture, great nature, and wonderful weather.

Q: How has your network grown as part of working at BCG?

A: It is like a family. We know everyone in the office and have strong personal bonds. We celebrate personal events together, like birthdays and anniversaries, and we party together very often. Also we have lots of social events organized by the office including company outings, watching rugby and soccer matches, BBQ parties (called braai in South Africa), outdoor activities, and more. All of this largely contributes to strengthening our bond with one another.
