At BCG, Innovators view the world from unexpected angles. They bring creativity and a fresh perspective to every challenge they face. Tiago is unafraid to try new things.
At BCG, you'll begin each day slightly overwhelmed and you'll finish it with a rewarding sense of achievement. It's amazing what we accomplish together, and how much fun we have along the way!
I came to BCG to broaden my horizons and grow past a technical background to become a business leader. I experienced multiple assignments ranging from strategy definition to change management, while gaining insights into various industries, including energy, banking, insurance, media, and retail. I also benefited from the opportunity to do an MBA at INSEAD. Thanks to BCG, I now enjoy multiple attractive career options.
Another key reason to join BCG was to feel valued and have an impact. On my first assignment, I was encouraged to contribute to a strategy definition workshop with board members who were eager to discuss the details behind an analysis that I had performed. My contribution and exposure has only increased. It's also astonishing to gaze at the impact of past assignments, from increasing a country's GDP by more than 1% to reducing corporate center costs of a global energy company by 20%.
Tiago holds a master’s in mechanical engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and an MBA from INSEAD. Prior to BCG, Tiago joined Galp Energia's trainee program, where he gained experience in two areas: innovation and business development and oil upstream.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: BCG helped me to move past a narrow engineering track and into a broader leadership path. In my mind, the transition was complete with the MBA at INSEAD. This transformative experience allowed me to truly expand my knowledge, engage with bright people from all over the world, and visit more than 20 countries in less than a year.
Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?
A: BCG is a truly global company, and thus there are plenty of international opportunities. In the first months, I had one-week trainings in Munich, London, and Paris that really allowed me to get into the BCG mindset. I've also seized the opportunity to join cross-office staffing assignments in distinct locations such as Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Doha, Luanda, Madrid, Vienna, and Warsaw. Of these experiences, the most interesting was to develop a corporate social-responsibility strategy for a global oil producer operating in Angola. Basically, we were asked to define the optimal strategy to spend $50 million in order to maximize the benefit for the population. This assignment had a life-changing impact on thousands of deprived people and was intensely rewarding.
Q: What’s your home office environment like?
A: In my opinion, the environment at BCG Lisbon is the key differentiator that truly sets it apart from other companies. Anytime you have a doubt or an issue, there is someone available and happy to support you. We are all very united, not only on a professional level but most remarkably also on a personal level. For instance, every Wednesday evening we play soccer, and almost every weekend we organize either dinner or drinks with everyone. I'd say that at BCG Lisbon, the office feels like home and the people like family.
