Tammie Is a Fearless Ally

Associate, Singapore

At BCG, Allies bring a sense of collaboration and excitement to their teams. They create an atmosphere of trust and support in which people can do their best work. Tammie is unafraid to try new things.

At BCG, what is most important is not how much you have already learned but how much you are willing to learn. We are not defined by our age, experience, or background but by our drive and ability to step up.

Tammie

In Tammie’s Words

Although BCG as an employer excels in many dimensions, what really drew me to join and to stay is its community. On my very first case, I was in a room full of partners and project leaders brainstorming about an issue. When I spoke up, I was surprised by how everybody immediately stopped talking, turned to me, and gave me the same absolute attention and respect as they did each other despite the gap in ranking. In fact, I was a bit nervous with all of that sudden attention!

I quickly learned that this is BCG’s culture: regardless of your background and title, you are encouraged and expected to contribute to the team and your input is as valuable as anyone else’s. BCG has given me a community of giants whose shoulders I stand on, and I have learned so much from the mentors and friends I have met here who constantly inspire me.

Q&A

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: At BCG, I am grateful to be surrounded by people I respect and admire. Even after a long day of work, my team is often ready to launch into deep discussions about anything and everything at the dinner table. It is so refreshing and inspiring to be surrounded by people who are intellectually curious, driven to problem solving out of genuine interest and not just because it’s their day job.

Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?

A: As a fresh graduate, there are very few opportunities to take on as much responsibility as you can at BCG. At school, you are only accountable for yourself within the safety of the classroom walls. At BCG, your actions have very real impact on your client’s business, your client’s job, and your team. Being pushed to deliver on tangible results with real consequences has driven me to step up and to think about my work from a different perspective in order to ensure success for my client.

Q: What are some of your goals and how does working at BCG support them?

A: Ultimately, I hope to go into social-impact investing or social entrepreneurship. I believe that there is a lot of impact to be made in the intersection of market forces and social impact, and I think that BCG is the best place for me to build the requisite skill sets. There are two ways BCG does this: first, by giving me exposure to a wealth of people, projects, and places that train me to solve problems in multiple dimensions; and second, by providing me with a network of mentors and peers who are extremely talented but also passionate about making a difference in the world.
