Diversity and inclusion are more than our ambition; they’re our advantage. Passionate, open-minded people of all backgrounds, genders, sexual orientations, and ethnicities enable us to analyze problems from a broader perspective and challenge established ways of thinking.
At BCG, diversity is one of our core founding values. A richness of viewpoints, along with diversity of expertise, experience, and backgrounds, are fundamental to our success. This diversity enables us to meet the complex and wide range of business challenges that our clients encounter, resulting in an environment in which creative tensions foster new ideas.
We seek and hire the top talent from around the globe, encourage mobility across our offices and among our functional groups, and provide opportunities for our people to come together to exchange perspectives. The result is an environment that values and celebrates diversity.
We are deeply committed to making BCG a company in which all individuals are welcomed and given the opportunity to flourish, regardless of background, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation.
Women@BCG is far more than a networking organization. It has the strategic objective of increasing the number, success, and job satisfaction of women at BCG. There has been tremendous progress and growth in increasing the representation of women within our firm overall and in key leadership positions in particular.
Some of the key components are:
There are numerous models for success. Many women at BCG take the initiative and stake out new terrain—through building their own practices, exploring new regions, or developing new initiatives and innovations that challenge established thinking. Within one BCG, there are many paths, and you can choose the one you wish to follow.
BCG goes beyond surface-level approaches to work-life balance for consultants; we pursue a better way to work . Our approach helps ensure sustainable intensity through options within our Flexibility@BCG program. We turned our gaze inward to establish a better workplace environment, getting to the root causes through our Apprenticeship in Action (AiA) initiative. AiA identified a set of key themes to improve retention, satisfaction, and promotion of its employees to senior management. The changes driven by AiA are a powerful tool to influence our culture, behavior, and mind-sets.
We are, by our very nature, a collection of diverse individuals. Through our Segment of One program, mentorship, and leadership commitment, we support each and every BCGer's goals and ambitions. In addition, for those who wish to start a family during their tenure, or already are parents, BCG's support for working mothers is generous by design, with a strong set of policies as well as informal norms to help women succeed during and after their pregnancies or adoptions.
I am continually impressed by BCG's commitment to Women@BCG, which aims to empower women across the company to fulfill their potential. From the day I joined the firm I have been welcomed and supported beyond my expectations. This collaborative spirit translates into a seamless access to a global network of experts.
I am energized by the female role models at BCG: they make me aware of what I can achieve in my consulting career.
At BCG, I have taken two career breaks and transferred offices. As a new mother, I have appreciated the opportunity to take time off as well as to work part-time while continuing to develop my career.
Many of my friends have had to trade off personal development for flexibility, or meaning for security. I’m very lucky that my career can meet all these criteria.
With a perfect score of 100, BCG has been named one of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s “Best Places to Work for LGBT Equality” for nine straight years.
We focus on supporting LGBT individuals during the recruiting process, throughout their careers at BCG, and through alumni networking after they have left the firm. We actively recruit top LGBT talent and provide a supportive environment for every employee at our company to become a leader for positive change.
BCG’s LGBT Network (LGBTN) offers extensive career development support and networking opportunities—including an annual conference—to connect with and learn from fellow LGBT professionals. At the local level, there are a variety of activities, from affiliation activities such as happy hours to career coaching, education, and community service.
Whether you choose to be public or private about your sexuality, BCG provides the support you need to grow as a person and as a professional.
LGBT Network was quick to include me in the community. Through this group, I have made connections in Boston and beyond.
I have found BCG always thinks about what's right for the individual. I benefit from apprenticeship on my projects, mentorship in my local office, and the additional advantage of the support the LGBT Network.”
The HRC score and LGBT Network were definitely some of the things that drew me to BCG when I was considering a position here. I felt instantly welcomed by the LGBT BST Network. Some of my most helpful mentors and closest friends have come out of the Network. It's been great to see how open BCG is to suggestions from the group and how supportive they are of the Network growing.
The LGBTN is the reason I am at BCG – it was that first connection with the Network that moved me to apply. Eight years later, I have no regrets and continue to find the Network to be an important part of my BCG experience. My involvement has led to a set of rich personal and professional relationships that go far beyond the sphere of my role and extend to our LGBTN alumni. I really appreciate the many investments BCG makes in the LGBTN and inclusion more broadly.
The LGBT Network is an incredible network of mentors, thought-partners and friends whom have helped me navigate and shape my career during almost a decade with BCG. As I look forward to building a family, I am thrilled to know that BCG's tireless efforts to be a the forefront of LGBT rights and career flexibility for parents, whether gay or straight, will be provide me the support I need to combine raising a family with a deeply challenging and meaningful career.
BCG works to recruit, develop, and retain top African American, Asian, and Hispanic talent for our US offices, and we offer a variety of mentoring, affiliation, and development programs designed to expand and enrich your career.
Last year, we introduced the “node” program at the office level. The network node—typically a partner or principal—oversees mentorship and affiliation programs at the office. These programs provide additional opportunities for senior leaders to coach and mentor new employees and more junior employees year-round. The affiliation activities build a network of support and development that are critical to satisfaction and retention at BCG. Development and mentor ship are also a focus of the annual diversity retreat.
In addition, there are mentorship programs focused on diversity, which go above and beyond the existing local apprenticeship and coaching offered to all interns from office sponsors, case teams, buddies, and officemates. We host diversity-centric social events in most offices to provide network opportunities on a local level.
Our diversity initiatives have earned numerous awards and recognitions, including Top 50 and Top 100 rankings from Diversity MBA and Black Enterprise magazines, respectively.
We support and sponsor numerous national conferences and organizations, including MBA JumpStart, Management Leadership for Tomorrow, and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. At a local level with our various partner schools, we also sponsor the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and National Society of Black Engineers.
We work with leading organizations to coordinate career and interviewing workshops, presentations, lunches, and other events to recruit top graduates. Through programs such as Bridge to Consulting, Growing Future Leaders, and Externships, we provide exposure and work experience to undergraduate diversity students.
In addition, the Africa Talent Program offers exceptional candidates with strong ties to or interests in Africa an opportunity to spend one to two years at one of our offices in the US or Europe before joining one of our Africa offices.
The US Ethnic Diversity Network has been critical to my professional and personal development at BCG. Most of my mentors and closest friends at BCG have come through the Network.
Beyond a group of colleagues, I've found in the US Ethnic Diversity Network a group of true friends and mentors that have supported me personally and professionally during my time at BCG.
The US Ethnic Diversity network is immensely important to me personally, and extremely important to the firm and to our clients. We are developing the leaders that will make the firm, and make our communities thrive in the short, medium and long term.
The Ethnic Diversity Network provides a platform for me to connect with other members at all levels across the region. It's a great way for junior consultants to find a mentor and grow their BCG network beyond their home office and practice-area interests.
Through regular mentorship connections and affiliation activities, the US Ethinic Diversity Network strengthens my professional network. It enhances my connections and empowers me to 'bring my whole self' to work.
Starting with the team that recruited me, the US Ethnic Diversity Network has been a source of support for my BCG career through mentorship and development, opportunities as well as way to create friendships beyond my office and case work.
The US Ethnic Diversity Network allows me to feel connected with people in my same position who might work in offices I’ve never even been to. The advice I got during our retreats and events has been a great resource to prepare for the nuances of each career step here at BCG.
As a leader in the US Ethnic Diversity Network, my focus is on providing diversity candidates with the coaching, mentorship, and insights they need to succeed in the recruiting process and ultimately land a role at BCG.
BCG deeply values the talent, training, and proven leadership skills that veterans bring to the organization.
The BCG Veterans Network promotes affiliation among BCG candidates, consultants, and alumni with military or intelligence service experience. Our mission is to raise awareness of consulting as a career path for veterans, help veterans navigate the transition into a civilian career at BCG, and support veterans in better understanding the value of their experience and how to leverage their unique skills to succeed at BCG.
Our members represent every branch of US service, as well as US intelligence services and the military forces of many other nations from around the world working in the US. As a veteran at BCG, you're supported by a large and growing network of people who understand your experience and how to help you grow into a business-minded leader.
The skills that make veterans successful in the military are the same ones that enable success in consulting. You understand how to work in a team; you can perform under stress; you value loyalty; and you can inspire the highest level of performance.
Here at BCG, consultants are expected to participate actively in problem solving and to support each other in executing work. It aligns very well with values learned in the military.
I've found that many of the same traits I acquired in the military—things like confidence, energy, and reliability—have translated directly to my work as a BCG consultant.
The transition from military service directly to BCG has been surprisingly smooth. BCG has provided focused training that has enabled me to connect the skills I learned in the military to business.
BCG is a great place to continue to challenge yourself, learn new skills, develop as a leader, and grow in a tight-knit team. The culture of support is fantastic, and veterans tend to excel here.
