When the Best in Class Wants to Be Better

My proudest BCG moment was when we helped carve the productivity improvement journey of Singapore—a country known around the world for its efficiency. This was indeed a case of making best-in-class even better.

Impact Story

Our BCG team has been supporting the Singapore government closely on its productivity journey since 2009, when the country first identified productivity as a key lever for the next wave of development. We benchmarked Singapore’s starting point compared with global best practices, focusing on key problem industries, such as retail and food service. We then helped design a roadmap for productivity growth, including key imperatives for government and industry. This roadmap had particular relevance for SMEs in Singapore. Our recommendations were adopted and formed the basis for the five-year productivity plan in key industries.

We are now initiating best-in-class training programs to enable SMEs to improve productivity. BCG’s thought leadership in this space was recognized in the media. I was part of a panel that discussed the agenda for the Committee for Future Economy (CFE) Singapore. Jeffrey Chua and I wrote an article about the future of retail in Singapore, which was covered in a leading newspaper. BCG has been invited to play a significant role in the CFE going forward, including a presence on several subcommittees. In a way, I feel that our work contributed to nation building, and that makes me feel very proud.
