At BCG, Pioneers have the courage to take action on unique insights. They share and activate ideas that enable our clients to gain the competitive edge. Huw connects the dots to see the bigger picture.
Job satisfaction is derived from doing great work, and BCG enables you to do work you never thought possible—inspirational colleagues, value-adding managers, and excellent support services all contribute to your success at BCG.
BCG supported my growth by believing in my ability and placing me in situations where my learning and development was crucial to a team’s success.
My ideal career path changed when I was first exposed to management consulting while on exchange at UC Berkeley. Before this, I had decided on chartered accountancy and it was a tough decision to give up the eventual CA(SA), but one that I will never regret.
BCG has given me the opportunity to learn about myself in a broad range of work contexts. This has been vital in giving me the direction I now have. One of the unique features of BCG is that you are expected to drive your own career. This personal drive comes with guidance from BCG leadership, but ultimately your plans are respected and supported. Because of this, BCG is represented by a diverse group of people who add value to clients and the culture within the office.
Huw holds a bachelor of business science from the University of Cape Town and attended the Haas School of Business on an exchange program.
Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?
A: At one point during my internship, a principal in the office asked me if I would like to go for a mountain bike ride before work. At that moment, I knew BCG leadership listened and appreciated who I was as an individual and encouraged me to pursue my interests outside of the work environment. I am someone who enjoys working hard and achieving good results, but at the same time I strive to achieve balance. This balance is nonnegotiable for me and has significantly contributed to my enjoyment at BCG.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: I learned both the value of experience and the value of a fresh opinion. These two combined are what drive innovation at BCG. New thinking without contextual validation is often exciting but not applicable. This is where the global network of BCG’s experts provides a solid sounding board for any potentially groundbreaking ideas you may have.
Q: What inspires you about BCG?
A: The backbone of any large company is its people, and it is the people at BCG that inspire me. I have worked with many people who have challenged my thinking, both about my work and more broadly. Luckily many of my colleagues have become good friends who will remain friends outside of the BCG context. Another inspiration is the growth this group of people has managed to achieve. It is really a privilege to be a part of the fastest-growing management consulting company.
