New York Consulting Staffing and People Team Director, New York
At BCG, Allies bring a sense of collaboration and excitement to their teams. They create an atmosphere of trust and support in which people can do their best work. Vickie connects the dots to see the bigger picture.
BCG is an incredible incubator for top-notch talent. I have been lucky enough to be both a beneficiary and a curator of that capability, and it has become the formative element in my professional life.
I started my professional career in medicine and then decided that I wanted to expand my scientific and clinical experience to a broader context and for greater impact. BCG was a fantastic way to do that, exposing me to a variety of perspectives and bringing together expertise from across many industries to drive insight for our clients. In some ways, the insight process was familiar because it's very diagnostic in nature—much like what you'd do for a patient, but at BCG it’s for a client. The speed, intensity, and quality of the professional development at BCG was also astounding. I was in front of senior executives, leading deep conversations and polishing my presentation and facilitation skills, not to mention my analytic capabilities, earlier and faster than I ever thought possible.
In addition, BCG offers so many career paths. When I needed to do something different due to personal constraints, there were several courses to follow that eventually led me to my current role working with the New York office across all of our People Team functions. While it's different from client work, the relationships I've built and the exposure to both the individual staff and the senior leadership of BCG continue to inspire me on a regular basis. The desire to team and arrive at creative, flexible solutions is unparalleled on the inside of BCG as well as on the outside.
Vickie earned her undergraduate degree from Dartmouth College, an MD from the Yale University School of Medicine, and an MBA from the Yale School of Management. She completed a preliminary year of residency in internal medicine at New York University.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Working in HR-related issues at BCG has been an enriching and rewarding experience. While I didn't start out in my career to be an HR/talent professional, within the context of BCG this has been a natural evolution for me. I've learned many new things about compensation strategy, benefits, and other "technical" aspects of HR, but my current role is very much about strategic talent management and aligning BCG's product—our people—with what our clients and business need. The wonderful thing about BCG, though, is that we also focus so closely on the individual that decisions aren't just about who goes where to fill an empty spot on a team—they’re about how to create and sustain the best possible professional development experience for that individual as well as for the person who will be managing that individual. Seeing the pieces come together while working with a team to craft the right balance of skills and personalities that match the BCG side and the client side is one of the most fulfilling and difficult parts of my job, but I absolutely love it.
Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?
A: BCG just felt right from the beginning. As a summer consultant, I remember going to a meeting at the UN here in New York and realizing that I was speaking directly to leaders in global health it would otherwise take a 20-year career in medicine to access. That level of impact in such a short time and in such a powerful way drew me to BCG and was emblematic of the enormous opportunity and impact offered by the firm.
Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most interesting for you?
A: I love how many different international experiences we offer. As a consultant and project leader, I traveled to many countries for case work and spent substantial time in Europe. In my current role, I support many of the mobility programs for our staff and assemble teams from across the globe, whether they work here in the US or are working abroad. It’s incredibly powerful to partner with my colleagues in international offices and see those teams come together and get a true sense of BCG as one firm.
