Global Compact Board Program

How to get the board on board with sustainability.

As leaders around the world increasingly recognize the material impact of nonfinancial issues on business results, they are starting to acknowledge that the fiduciary duty of boards of directors includes a responsibility to manage the risks and opportunities related to sustainability.

BCG is a knowledge partner of the United Nations Global Compact's Board Program, which is the first of its kind to enable and support boards in defining their role in sustainability governance. The program comprises two modules. The first focuses on connecting sustainability with strategy and understanding the organization's material sustainability issues. The second concentrates on helping the board define its role in driving sustainability forward. Overall, the program supports boards in:

  • Understanding the importance of corporate sustainability to the company’s long-term viability
  • Defining the central role board members can and should play in overseeing and driving corporate sustainability: embedding it into board duties, governance mechanisms, and structures
  • Demonstrating leadership on board adoption and oversight of corporate sustainability with investors, employees, and customers
