Navigating the New World of IT in Consumer Packaged Goods

BCG’s IT Benchmarking Survey and companion app find that the consumer packaged goods industry is undergoing unprecedented change.

The CPG industry is in the midst of a major transformation, driven by advances in technology and dramatic shifts in consumer preferences. At the same time, the pressure to keep costs low and operate more efficiently has never been more intense.

To understand how IT departments in CPG companies are navigating this new landscape, BCG and the Grocery Manufacturers Association conducted benchmarking on a wide variety of strategic IT topics. Researchers surveyed 37 CPG manufacturers in the US and Europe and interviewed more than 15 chief information officers. The study also drew on BCG’s experience working with many of the leading global CPG manufacturers and retailers.

The survey found that the CPG industry is undergoing unprecedented change, which is challenging IT departments to manage digital disruption and rethink the way they work:

  • E-commerce penetration has reached 8% to 20% in many CPG categories, and consumers have come to expect 24-7 service, whether on their desktop, tablet, or mobile device. Meanwhile, in-store traffic is declining.
  • With the explosion of technological and digital innovations in the marketplace—and irrevocably altering consumer purchasing habits—CPG companies need to build capabilities in data analytics that can drive future growth.
  • CIOs must decide how to invest in IT innovation, new digital capabilities, and data analytics while balancing pressures to reduce costs. Businesses have to rethink how they access and safeguard information, interact with consumers holding vital data, and manage new technologies.
