Julian Is an Insightful Storyteller

Associate, London

At BCG, Storytellers synthesize complex information and ideas. They believe in bringing the whole team together to get a broader perspective. Julian finds clarity in a complex world.

At BCG, I witnessed firsthand that nothing is impossible when you bring together a group of diverse, intelligent, and driven people who care about the work that they do.

In Julian's Words

I grew up in a suburban city in Malaysia called Subang Jaya, and for as long as I can remember I've always been the curious sort. My curiosity and passion for learning ultimately led me to pursue a PhD in fracture mechanics, investigating airplane wings, before joining BCG.

I am proud to say that at BCG my learning has not only continued but has accelerated. This is partly due to the nature of the job, in which we solve our clients' most complex problems, but mainly due to the opportunity to work with amazing people on a daily basis.

There are very few places I can think of which provide a better platform to launch your career, especially when you're fresh out of university, as it was in my case.

About Julian

Julian holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering science from the University of Oxford and a PhD in the micromechanics of composite materials from the University of Cambridge.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: Working at BCG has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Not only do you have the privilege of helping some of the world's most important organizations solve their biggest problems, but you are also truly valued as a person in the firm. Your views and your outputs are valued regardless of background or tenure. Diversity is highly regarded, and it’s what makes BCG great at problem solving.

Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?

A: Perhaps the biggest lesson I've learned is that I can accomplish much more than I think I am capable of doing. At BCG, you are immersed in an environment that challenges you professionally, which for someone in their first year can be slightly unsettling. But it is precisely through being in such an environment that you grow as a person—and through this experience I've learned that boundaries are merely lines you draw in your head.

Q: What’s your home office environment like?

A: The London office is incredibly diverse, not just culturally but also from an academic and commercial standpoint as well. What this creates is an office that is very open to new ideas and has a wealth of collective expertise to tap into. It is really quite cool when you have an important document in a foreign language that you want to understand and help is only an e-mail away! London is also consistently recognized as one of the best offices when it comes to organizing bonding events. From a weekend retreat on the Sardinian sands to an evening of The Nutcracker at the Royal Opera House, the social events organized by the London office never disappoint.
