Consultant, Jakarta

At BCG, Seekers go deep into the challenging issues our clients face. Their curiosity empowers our teams to facilitate change and add value to society. Nelly finds clarity in a complex world.

The best part of working at BCG is you continuously face different challenges in every case. Life is never boring at BCG!

In Nelly’s Words

I was attracted to BCG for the world-class experience and exposure that comes with the name. In my initial years, I was exposed to how boards of directors and senior government officials make critical decisions. This was a priceless experience to have in my early 20s. Since then, I have had the opportunity to work with exceptional minds and have been exposed to a multitude of cases that span multiple industries, functions, and geographies, helping me to grow in perspective and professional character.

What I admire the most at BCG is how people have genuinely supported me and invested in my success. My peers and mentors have always been supportive, helping a working mom like me manage my family priorities and progress well in my career. The meaningful relationships I've built with BCG leaders encourage open conversations that make BCG a sustainable workplace.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: I enjoy the nature of working on a project basis. Within a given timeframe, I focus on project deliverables and have the flexibility to manage my own time. At the end of a project, my performance is measured against these deliverables and not based on, for example, how long I stay in the office. This process also means that I am presented with different challenges on every case. There are no boring days here. Plus, I get to work closely with different colleagues on each case. It's amazing to see how close we are by end of the case. My longest-lasting friendships started as connections I made on a BCG case.

Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?

A: A BCG partner once told me when I just joined the firm, "Working at BCG is a marathon and not a sprint." I didn't quite understand the expression until I was starting my own family, which forced me to learn to manage different priorities. I used to be too concerned to ask about what I wanted and ended up compromising my work. I didn't realize how easy it is to have open conversations with my BCG leadership team. They also care about making BCG a sustainable workplace. And now, with BCG’s successful PTO (predictability, teaming, open communication) initiative, it's much easier to maintain this work-life balance through a formalized platform.

Q: How have you benefited from a mentoring relationship at BCG?

A: My BCG mentors are the ones really helping me to succeed at work. I view them as my personal board of advisors: one for creative thinking, one for communication, and so on. I am very lucky that they have invested their time in me, especially since I know how busy they are. They helped me navigate my first BCG year, shaped my character, and gave me tactical advice on how to quickly show improvement at work. I'm also very grateful for all their guidance in securing BCG's b-school sponsorship, get accepted at the school I wanted, and transition back to BCG life afterwards.
