Unify and Deliver Impact

Save the Children transforms its organization to increase its impact for children.

Save the Children is the world's leading independent organization for children. Save the Children works in around 120 countries to achieve breakthroughs in the way the world treats children. Up until 2009, it operated as a loose alliance of 29 member organizations, each of which raised funds and managed programs both domestically and internationally. In a process moderated by BCG, the leaders of the organization decided greater integration and centrally coordinated international programming was essential to increase Save the Children’s impact and give it a stronger voice and broader expertise to serve children better.

BCG then collaborated with Save the Children on an ambitious three-year transformation program designed to meet these objectives. Project goals included the merging of international operations into a single delivery channel, designing a new integrated organizational structure, creating a project management office (PMO) to foster unified activities, and enabling a change and monitoring process. The PMO was especially important because it provided “big picture” oversight to ensure stakeholders kept overall mission goals in mind.

With BCG’s support, Save the Children has become a unified global organization that has a bigger impact on children. Save the Children has been able to reach more children more quickly, and improve its impact. Save the Children has become a more viable partner for donors, and secured large grants, due to its more coordinated approach. In Nepal, for example, Save the Children secured a five-year grant, which would probably not have been accessible previously. This has helped reduce malnutrition in that country from more than 40% to below 35%.

Save the Children has been able to reach more children more quickly, and provide greater impact through better coordination of operations and resources.
