In Jon’s Words

I joined BCG in 2003, believing that it was the best place for me to learn how to lead in business. My career has taken me to three different geographies, a half-dozen growing and expanding roles, and from the consulting side to an internal finance leadership role at BCG. In how many other companies could I have defined this course for myself? I suspect very few, but I have never felt a need to find out.

I am most proud of being part of a team—surrounded by people I truly enjoy—that has guided BCG on a journey to become a leading global firm in the consulting industry. Our capabilities have expanded, our business model has become more diverse, but most important our values have not changed. We both challenge and respect each other as we strive for a better way.

Q&A

Q: What advice would you give to someone who wants to work at BCG?

A: Interviewing is an exploration of mutual fit and an important time to get to know BCG. Asking questions is one of the most important parts of the process. Think about what will be the key to your success, what will determine a good fit. And don’t wait until the last five minutes to ask; interviews should be a dialogue and are as much for you as they are for BCG.

Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?

A: Being a part of running a global business means that a 9-to-5 schedule is not practical for me or many of my team members. A career at BCG demands and also provides more flexibility to get the job done. If my team members have early phone calls with people in Asia, they often work the morning from home. When we have personal responsibilities, we take care of them first. We measure on results, not hours. And we cover for each other. I find the best way to maintain a sustainable career is to set boundaries and communicate them. For me, these include being home for dinner with my three young children and disconnecting for the weekend.

Q: If you weren’t working at BCG, what would you be doing?

A: Coaching youth sports. I still remember many of the life lessons my favorite coaches taught me and would love the thrill to motivate, inspire, compete, and have fun.
