Pim Is a Passionate Explorer

Principal, Amsterdam

At BCG, Explorers are unafraid to embark on new journeys. They try new solutions to untangle complex problems and drive transformational change. Pim champions uncommon ideas.

BCG supported my growth by consistently putting me in novel situations and roles, enabling me to learn broadly. After several years at BCG, I am still learning as much as when I first started.

In Pim's Words

After completing my studies in econometrics, I wanted to apply my skills and knowledge in practice, not just in theory. At the same time I desired an environment that challenges me every day and enables me to learn. BCG was exactly what I was looking for. From the beginning I have worked closely with senior executives on reshaping their companies and strategies. Every new project turns out to be unique, enables me to learn, and challenges me to improve myself. On top of that, BCG provides many hours of formal training and the opportunity to do an MBA, which I gladly used. Finally, my colleagues all share my passion for learning and are always available to mentor and coach me. After several years at BCG, I am still learning as much as when I first started.

About Pim

Pim holds an MSc in econometrics (cum laude) and a BSc in international business (with distinction), both from Tilburg University. Additionally, he holds an MBA from INSEAD (with distinction).

Q&A

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: What I love about BCG is the diversity of experiences and the intellectual challenges that come with that. Every project is new in some way, requiring me to be flexible in my thinking and learn quickly. I find it very satisfying when, after spending some time in a new project, we develop novel insights with the team that change the way clients view their problem. This sort of experience is satisfying every time!

Q: What have been the most interesting international experiences for you at BCG?

A: My most interesting international experience is when I was an ambassador at BCG’s Sydney office. I spent a year working for Australian clients, which helped me develop my cross-cultural skills and which really broadened my perspectives on how to run successful businesses. Of course, the lifestyle of living in Sydney was a nice bonus. Every weekend was like a mini-vacation!

Q: What does innovation mean to you, and how do you innovate in your role?

A: I think innovation is the name of the game in almost all industries going forward. Even consulting! I believe real innovation occurs when you not only integrate new technologies, possibilities, or ways of doing things into the daily process but also fundamentally redesign how this process works. To do this, you need to have an open mind (let go of past routines) and think creatively (not substitute one technology for the other but rather redesign completely how you work). I make a conscious effort to embrace new possibilities and rethink how this enables us to help our clients differently. For example, recently I’ve worked with Tableau to create an analytical web application to guide the client through a complex analytical story. And, while in Sydney, I worked together with BCG Digital Ventures to create an iPad app mockup of a performance management system. It gives me a lot of energy to use these innovative approaches and it works great with clients, too!
