I think the DNA of true BCGers is very unique. We have genuinely caring people who are incredibly smart yet modest, and they always go that extra mile for the people around them.
When I first heard about BCG, I didn’t know a huge amount about consulting. I was attracted to the job as I thought I would learn a tremendous amount, perhaps get the chance to travel, and do some really interesting work for very senior people in big-brand organizations.
That was ten years ago, when I was applying for an internship at BCG London. Those initial views I held were definitely true, but they were just the tip of the iceberg. I’ve grown up through BCG starting with that internship, and I’ve found the variety of projects we do to be addictive, the pace that we work at to be exciting, and the problems we solve to be inspiring. All of this is within a culture where people are supportive and individuals are given a chance to rise up quickly. It’s a great package that brought me to BCG, and it keeps me here.
Harsha holds a degree in medicine from Edinburgh University and a degree in management from Imperial College London.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: One of the great things about BCG is the great variety of people that you find here—differences in terms of education, working styles, hobbies, etc. However, I really believe there is something that runs through the vast majority of BCGers that forms the core of our culture. Everyone is incredibly smart and ambitious—that goes without saying—but people genuinely care. They care about their clients, they have tremendous pride in doing the right thing through their work, and they pay a huge amount of attention to the development of their people. The job requires you to care, but BCGers go a level beyond that.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: There are some things BCG has in place to support sustainability. Initiatives such as PTO (predictability, teaming, and open communication) , deliberately add some structure to our work so that we think about how to be efficient and find opportunities to do things that are important to us at predictable times. Beyond that, good supportive teams make all the difference, keep the job interesting, and give us a healthy dose of social time too.
Q: What trends are you following and why?
A: As a medic, but more generally as a self confessed geek, I have a huge belief in the convergence of health care and technology. In the consumer space, we are starting to see this with wearables, but I don’t think we’ve scratched the surface. Medical applications, such as remote health care and nano-invasive diagnostics, are becoming more common. But as we become more used to increasingly powerful devices around us that can also serve as diagnostic and perhaps treatment tools, I think we will start to see core health care functions become a regular feature in day-to-day living.
