Global Challenger-to-Leader Program

Looking to expand globally? The Global Challenger-to-Leader Program (C2L) offers the necessary guidance and expertise to make globalization a success.

The rise of companies from emerging markets to positions of international leadership is not a new phenomenon. Japanese conglomerates in the 1960s and 1970s and Korean conglomerates in the 1980s and 1990s competed head-to-head with their international counterparts in the race to become industry leaders.

The difference today is that a new generation of global challengers—fast-growing, fast-globalizing companies—are springing forth from emerging markets in other parts of the world, such as China, India, Southeast Asia, Africa, and Latin America. They face their own challenges in carving this pathway to globalization but a more pervasive, active pursuit of global growth has arrived.

BCG’s C2L Program supports global challengers or other expanding companies located in emerging markets in their quest to become worldwide leaders in their respective industries. C2L is the ideal solution for fundamentally reshaping existing globalization strategies or developing a first-time, full-scale globalization program.

At its core, C2L provides the processes, tools, and expertise companies need so they can develop a highly effective globalization roadmap and quickly put the strategy into action. The C2L Program:

  • Provides senior management with a highly structured, systematic, and doable agenda for how to think about international growth in a new light
  • Makes an objective assessment of a company’s international achievements, as well as its strengths and weaknesses
  • Applies a thorough framework so current globalization goals and actions can be reprioritized
  • Creates a common platform within the management team so all tasks can be accomplished efficiently

  • Global Enterprise DNA. The underlying values that outline a company’s globalization ambitions and paths.
  • Global People and Organization Model. Embrace human capital and organizational capabilities to support a company’s global agenda.
  • Global Go-to-Markets Model. Utilize internal and external resources to expand a company’s reach and deliver the best results to consumers.
  • Global Operations Model. Adopt an integrated approach to support a company’s global operations.

Our Three-Step Approach

The C2L Program takes clients on a three-step journey toward global excellence.

  1. Determine your ambitions. Where are you positioned now and where do you want to be? During this phase, we assess a company’s current global position, identify global growth ambitions, determine growth enablers, and map requirements.
  2. Assess your readiness. How do you score on each of the dimensions? The C2L Readiness Survey identifies strengths and weaknesses, and generates a heat map across 20 C2L dimensions.
  3. Draft your roadmap. Where do you start and how do you execute? We work with companies to map a C2L transformation program, including priorities and requirements.

Transforming Global Challengers into Leaders

The real obstacle for global challengers is not how to establish a presence in new markets, BCG’s Sharad Verma reveals. It is how to create a harmonized global organization.
