The World Food Programme transforms its operations to feed more school children.

Eliminating hunger among children around the world remains one of the social sector’s most important goals. More than one billion people are classified as undernourished. Of these, 66 million are primary-school-age children. Malnutrition blocks individual development and creates significant risks for societies.

School feeding programs, such as those managed by the World Food Programme (WFP), are recognized as a key safety net for social protection. Primary benefits include improved school participation rates and cognitive learning, better access to schools for girls, and enhanced health.

With help provided by BCG, WFP improved the impact and efficiency of its programs by sharing best practices and tools for informed decision making. This also helped WFP manage trade-offs more effectively and promote sustainability by transitioning to nationally owned programs. WFP was able to widen its coverage to reach more children in need, with more than 20 million children in over 63 countries now benefitting from its efforts.

BCG supports the ongoing transformation of WFP’s school feeding program, especially the rollout to nationally owned programs. BCG developed tools to help WFP perform cost analyses, examine needs versus coverage in school feeding programs, and assess investment cases. These tools established processes for diagnosing the state of school feeding in individual countries as the basis for their further development.
