In Jai's Words

My background is in engineering, specifically machine learning and computer vision, but BCG has exposed me to so much more. In just my first year, I have learned about the competitive landscape of TV and broadband providers, the fund-raising challenges faced by an international NGO, and even the market entry options for a biscuit producer.

In addition to being placed in a variety of unfamiliar industries, I have been consistently challenged to take on difficult problems, think critically, and act fast. The fact that most BCG projects last from just a few weeks to a few months means that you have to follow a very structured approach to problem solving: proposing and testing divergent solutions before arriving at a clear recommendation.

Jai obtained a master’s in engineering, economics, and management from Oxford University. He grew up in Rome and Geneva.

Q&A

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: The diversity of projects and industries I have been exposed to has been unlike any other job. In my first year, I completed five projects, each in a different industry addressing unfamiliar problems. This has meant that I am constantly challenged and must learn to swim by being thrown in the deep end while at the same time being supported by my case team.

Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?

A: Learning at BCG comes in the form of both formal training (afternoon workshops and weeklong programs) and on-the-job learning. One of my most memorable afternoon workshops was run by two actors who filmed us individually giving impromptu speeches. Over the course of three hours, we worked on intonation, pacing, and body language—and the improvement was remarkable. Though I have gained a lot of technical knowledge the most valuable skill I have developed is to communicate clearly and confidently.

Q: If you could compare what you do at BCG with any other job, what would you say?

A: Working at BCG involves a huge amount of client-facing time. We typically spend Monday to Thursday at our clients' offices, working collaboratively with them to solve business problems. This means that we gain unique exposure to senior management at large and diverse organizations early on in our career.
