FlexTime has made it possible for me to stay in client service at BCG while managing a dual-career family. The partners with whom I work are consistently supportive of my FlexTime model, and we work together to ensure clients get what they need during my time off.
My work at BCG has ranged far from my undergraduate focus on medieval studies, but I still use some of the same skills: searching for data, drawing conclusions from disparate evidence, and engaging with diverse topics in their own "language." At BCG, I've had the chance to apply these skills across offices and industries, to drive impact for clients and grow with my teams.
What I value about BCG has also grown and changed over time. When I began as a summer associate in 2006, I loved working with brilliant colleagues on our clients' highest-impact problems, and I still do. Now, as a principal, I also value the opportunity to develop my teams and the flexibility BCG provides. I've become a mom, and BCG has supported my changing priorities with new modes of working: FlexTime at 80% capacity, leaves of absence, and office mobility. For me, BCG provides a combination of fulfillment and work-life balance far surpassing "business as usual."
Meg graduated from Duke University with a degree in medieval and Renaissance studies and economics.
Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: Right now, I'm working at a client based in Southern California but pretty far from our office in LA, so I spend a lot of time working in the back of a car. My nanny arrives at 6:30, I'm in the car and working by 6:45, and I'm at the client site around 9:15. Then, after several hours of meetings with my clients and my team, I head for home around 3:00 and spend a couple of hours on calls and e-mail from the car. By 5:30 or 6:00, I'm at home with my family, and my laptop is shut for the night.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: At BCG, I've had opportunities to work with inspiring clients right from the start, and the challenges I've been given have grown along with my capabilities. On day two of my first project as a summer associate, I was at a kickoff meeting with the client steering committee and was able to engage directly with the CEO of a national nonprofit. Now, I shape and lead meetings with senior executives of Fortune 100 companies. It's been a great journey.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: My BCG colleagues are remarkable in the combination of friendliness, smarts, and professionalism that they bring to every case team and client. BCGers are interesting individuals and great collaborators—and working with them is a big part of what makes my job fun.
