Mike Is a Curious Challenger

Principal, Detroit

At BCG, Challengers go against expected thinking and inspire their teams to be truly innovative. Mike goes deep to understand challenges.

BCG gives you the opportunity and the platform to challenge traditional thinking—to look at an industry's hardest questions in new ways—all so we can drive new and innovative solutions for our clients.

In Mike’s Words

I am a principal at BCG and lead many of our efforts within the automotive technology sector and BCG's Center for Digital in Automotive. My focus is on the concept of the “connected car” (infotainment and telematics) and self-driving vehicles. I also do extensive work in cloud computing and agile software development across industries.

I coauthored a BCG.perspectives report, Developing Software at the Speed of the Cloud, and contributed to Revolution in the Driver’s Seat: The Road to Autonomous Vehicles.

Within BCG, my work has centered on driving innovation through the application of new technologies and breakthrough product development processes. This has spanned defining 2025 strategic plans, leading rapid software prototyping efforts, and implementing large-scale agile transformations. It's all about getting new and disruptive products to the right market faster. BCG has invested to make us one of the preeminent firms in the technology space and I believe will continue to differentiate us as a firm for the foreseeable future.

About Mike

Mike holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a master's degree in electrical engineering systems from the University of Michigan with a focus on communication systems and artificial intelligence, and a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering also from the University of Michigan. Mike has been granted 6 patents in vehicle communication, connectivity, media, and app delivery and management.

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: The job is constantly evolving, forcing (and allowing) you to constantly learn and adapt. Within BCG, you never have two projects, clients, or teams that are quite the same. This dynamic allows you to see the same industry from multiple angles, apply what you learned from one industry to another, and continuously learn from your colleagues. The one consistent element across our work is the sole focus on delivering value for our clients. With that clarity comes the freedom to focus on doing the right thing.

Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?

A: I think I took a slightly different path within BCG than a lot of new hires have. I knew exactly the type of work I wanted to specialize in from day one instead of trying out many different industries. I was able to immerse myself in automotive technology projects right from the start. With that approach, BCG enabled me to grow in several ways: First, I have had the ability to understand the dynamics of related industries—bringing knowledge from working with tech and software companies, for example, to the automotive industry—which broadens both my and our clients' perspectives. Second, I have been able to take on leadership roles early in my career. Partners will fully embrace your potential to build a "business" around a topic you are passionate about. You can become your own mini-CEO but with all the resources of BCG behind you.

Q: Why did you choose to work at BCG?

A: I chose to come to BCG for the opportunity to work with smart people and the ability to make an impact at scale. BCG is about solving cutting-edge problems that transform companies and disrupt entire industries. As an example, the automotive industry is undergoing a revolution through the emergence of connected and autonomous driving vehicles. BCG is leading the thinking in this accelerating space, with clients across the automotive value chain. Personally, I've had the chance to lead much of this work, which enables both me and the firm to remain at the cutting edge of automotive technology.
