Mia

In Mia’s Words

About ten years ago, I joined BCG as a junior associate at the tender age of 21 and it has been an amazing journey. Today I am a principal in the Johannesburg office focusing on getting products and services to the vast African consumer base. On a typical day, I will interview a trader in one of Lagos bustling open markets, follow an Angolan “mama” along her journey of buying and selling products, or interview Nairobi’s urban dwellers on their consumption habits.

Next to the work itself, what I enjoy most about being part of BCG is that it is a true people company with a clear focus on supporting its employees to shape their personal journeys. When I asked to further my studies with an MBA after fewer than two years at the company, BCG sponsored my MBA at Harvard. When I asked to fully focus my career on emerging markets, I was transferred to Africa. When it was time to dedicate more time to my two newborn daughters, I was given the opportunity to work at reduced working capacity.

Q&A

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: Above everything else I truly enjoy working with my BCG colleagues. BCG has a unique ability to attract the most fun, smart, and interesting people from all walks of life. When I step into the office, it feels more like working with my friends than with just colleagues.

Q: Why is BCG a good place for a woman to work?

A: I believe a career at BCG is significantly more flexible than most other careers. Given the project nature of our business, it is very easy to take time off from work when needed—to travel the world, study further, finally find that dream husband of yours, or spend time at home with your kids. I also find that we women are the much better consultants; we know how to listen, build relationships, understand complex organizations, and so forth. This job was actually made for us. Finally, recruiting, developing, and retaining women is a key priority of the BCG leadership, and we have a large number of programs and initiatives in place to support our female consultants in excelling in what we do.

Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?

A: Smart, humble, compassionate, funny, creative, driven.
