The Campus Approach to Transformation

. Such a portfolio demands a flexible service platform that enables innovation and a network that connects customers in a reliable and cost-effective manner.

Getting to that point can be difficult, but there is a way to streamline the process by making sure everyone is on the same page in terms of setting goals and prioritizing tasks. The Campus Approach gathers key decision-makers together for frequent, informal face-to-face discussions about how to take the business to the next level. Mid- and senior-level managers spend up to three months meeting for three days each week at an off-site location in order to map out the company’s future—without the distraction of day-to-day operations.

While somewhat unorthodox, the Campus Approach is highly effective. It offers several benefits:

  • It mobilizes the entire organization. With a traditional approach, it can be difficult to get the key stakeholders in the right place at the right time to make decisions. Our approach ensures everyone is present, and it encourages the group to produce fast results.
  • It prevents shortsighted planning. It’s common for organizational leaders to focus on near-term results at the expense of long-term transformation. With the Campus Approach, leaders create a concrete road map detailing cross-functional effects today as well as in the mid- and long-term.
  • It locks in stakeholder commitment. The statement “I didn’t agree to that” no longer works as an excuse when everyone is involved in planning the project. All initiatives are formally signed by those who will be tasked with executing them.
  • It gives ownership of the transformation to everyone on the executive team. The traditional approach creates project silos with no joint responsibility at the senior level. The Campus Approach ensures that everyone on the board owns the entire transformation process and is responsible for the outcome.
