Helping Launch a New Global Business Plan
BCG has developed a business plan to set up the new global Alliance for Financial Inclusion of the Poor.
The German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) asked BCG to develop a business plan for the new global Alliance for Financial Inclusion of the Poor (AFI) to address the needs of more than 3 billion people in the developing world who lack access to basic financial services.
AFI has set a 2015 goal for the policymakers of 40 developing countries to implement financial policy solutions that will provide people living on less than $2 per day access to formal financial services.
BCG's task was to help launch AFI successfully and to help it reach its 2015 goal.
The BCG team developed a comprehensive business plan for AFI with a go-to-market strategy that included vision and positioning, alignment with strategic partners, policy exchange strategies, grant-making strategies and procedures, and policy research.
The plan also included a governance model and organization structure with designs for staffing, outsourcing, and contingencies for risks and mitigation.
Together with a comprehensive implementation plan, there was also a communications strategy in place to facilitate the successful launch of AFI.
With BCG’s business plan in place since December 2008, AFI should soon be able to launch and begin operations.
Implementation of all elements of the AFI business plan has begun, with the AFI team using our business plan on a daily basis, for internal use and for communication with and presentations to external stakeholders.
The AFI Web site uses wording and graphics taken directly from BCG’s business plan.
AFI is already reaping the benefits of this new business plan. Not only has it helped to create an innovative governance model by instituting a set of bylaws, it has created innovative, stripped-down grant-making procedures and templates, and it has put a clear communications strategy in place.
With these structures at work, employees new to AFI find they are able to hit the ground running and focus immediately on their jobs.
Also, the plan has proved useful in helping AFI clearly communicate to key stakeholders the thinking behind its strategies and programs.
