Aico Is a Dynamic Storyteller

Partner & Managing Director, Amsterdam

At BCG, Storytellers synthesize complex information and ideas. They believe in bringing the whole team together to get a broader perspective. Aico challenges the status quo.

You'll be successful at BCG if you realize that every opportunity is up for grabs, in a challenging but, more importantly, continuously supportive environment.

In Aico's Words

With a PhD in applied physics and previous work experience in the high-tech industry, I combined a scientific and corporate background as the starting point for my BCG career. BCG provided a great platform from which to build on this background and accelerate my personal development path. I am still profoundly amazed by the opportunities offered to me on a daily basis—ranging from working with the most inspiring colleagues and client counterparts to specializing in the energy and industrial goods industries by becoming an integral part of BCG’s international networks in these fields and having a leading role in one of the core processes in the Amsterdam office.

I always imagined that BCG would provide a great platform for development, but my journey has really outpaced my wildest expectations!

Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: Working at BCG is like a continuous adrenaline rush. You get to tackle inspiring, complex business problems across a wide range of industries and functional topics. As you’re celebrating the successful completion of one puzzle, the next interesting challenge already appears on the horizon. And all of this while working with some of the most inspiring people you’ll ever meet. Never a dull moment!

Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?

A: One of my first internal project team meetings immediately comes to mind. I was expecting the senior partner attending to call the shots. However, he opened with, “So Aico, what is your opinion?” I obviously hadn’t grasped the complexity of the problem yet, so my answer was only directionally relevant. But instead of this meeting turning into a spur of wisdom from the partner, we ended up having an engaged discussion that made me realize this really is a flat organization where everyone’s perspective is valued!

Q: What international experiences at BCG have been the most rewarding for you?

A: These are my most intense, but also rewarding, experiences. As a junior project leader, I was thrown in the middle of a major potential deal with an Asian acquirer and an American target. This was a truly international project, and the clear cultural differences between both sides made this one of the most rewarding learning opportunities I’ve come across.
