I grew up in Belarus. At university, I studied finance while tutoring high school students in mathematics. Following graduation, I worked as a project manager and accountant in an advertisement and design company in Belarus. Then I came to the United States and started from the ground up to pursue my true passion for working in computer science and technology. My first major technology job was at a large financial institution on their risk analytics team, where I worked with brilliant PhD mathematicians, chemists, and physicists. After two years of working there, I accepted an opportunity at BCG Platinion to apply my algorithmic thinking and coding abilities to dynamic consulting challenges that require higher-level thinking.
At BCG, I routinely have opportunities to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone, which has fostered my professional growth (for example, enhancing my communication skills). I have gained exposure to a diverse range of industries. I work mostly with data scientists from BCG GAMMA. I love working with data and advanced analytics, and I’m happy to have the opportunity to advance my career in this direction with BCG Platinion.
Aksana holds a bachelor of science in finance from Yanka Kupala State University of Hrodna in Belarus and has successfully completed several computer science courses at top universities.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: What I like best about working at BCG Platinion are the challenges I encounter that make me grow as a professional and as a person; the opportunities to make a big impact on our clients’ successes in different industries; the bright minds I have the pleasure to work with each day; and the guidance I receive on improving my weaknesses.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: In my first year at BCG Platinion, I learned the importance of demonstrating my strengths and competencies and effectively presenting ideas and solutions. Growing up in Belarus, I was taught to be a good listener and learner, and to be humble; I could be seen and appreciated without seeking attention for myself. While I retain these values, BCG Platinion has helped me learn to proactively communicate to ensure my ideas are heard. For example, BCG offers excellent, one-on-one Commanding Presence coaching sessions, through which I have further developed my presentation skills.
Q: What are some of your favorite things to do outside of the office?
A: Outside of the office, I am a health nut. I do long-distance running (currently training for this year’s NYC marathon), yoga, pilates, swimming, and biking, to name a few activities. And I am very serious about sustaining an intelligent diet and being smart about nutrition. We are what we eat. I love to make fresh juices for breakfast and smoothies for lunch.
Q: What's your office environment like?
A: The office in NYC is so beautiful; each day I am grateful for this “dream come true” environment.
My favorite day in the office is Friday, when I get to see most of my team. We do lunch and a retrospective, where we share what went wrong (and offer solutions), and what went right, and what we learned throughout the week. We also share weekend plans or travel experiences. My team is very friendly, and we have done several activities together outside of the office, including hiking, skiing, movie-watching, and walking together on the High Line.
Q: What are you reading right now, and why is it interesting?
A: Right now I am reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey, which our CEO recommended. I had wanted to read this book for a long time. The book advises concentrating on what is most important in the long run and gives many great tips about proactivity and synergy. One quotation I especially like is: “Could synergy not create a new script for the next generation—one that is more geared to service and contribution, and is less protective, less adversarial, less selfish; one that is more open, more trusting, more giving, and is less defensive, protective, and political; one that is more loving, more caring, and is less possessive and judgmental?”
