At BCG, Explorers are unafraid to embark on new journeys. They try new solutions to untangle complex problems and drive transformational change. Aliaksei connects the dots to see the bigger picture.
After some time with BCG, you realize with 100% clarity that with your team you can tackle absolutely any problem—even if the path to success isn't clear at the moment.
My background is in math and physics, and then in economics through leading programs in CIS. For a very long time, I couldn't decide on my desired career path: options included science, various industries, investment banking, consulting. But BCG became the one and only option for me after I did an internship in the middle of my master’s studies. I completely stopped filing applications to other companies and even canceled a scheduled interview at another consulting firm.
BCG is all about assembling great people and creating a productive environment for your development. I was very impressed by my project team on my first project and was sure that my next team couldn't be at the same level. In fact, the next team was different but equally wonderful. This streak continues, and now I realize that I was lucky not with my first case but with applying to the right company in the first place.
Aliaksei holds a master’s degree in applied physics and mathematics from the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and a master’s degree in economics from the New Economic School (Moscow).
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: One of the most important qualities for a BCGer to have is immense curiosity. Switching among industries and project types, you get to understand the inner working of the world around you. That's a super bonus of BCG, and it would be wasted on someone without that curiosity. I personally would have trouble surviving at a different job. It wouldn’t be true to claim that are never routine moments on a project, but I truly believe that the amount of routine, boring, or bureaucratic work is as low as it can be so we can still deliver value to our clients.
Q: What inspires you about BCG?
A: In the challenging environment of BCG, you develop very fast. Leadership will give you as much responsibility as you're ready to take. That never means that you're on your own. You always work as one team, and everyone around you is there to help you. What people outside of the company rarely realize is that at BCG there is an extremely open culture and a flat hierarchy. So a partner can change his or her opinion after talking with an associate—although the associate has to be extremely good in a debate). Even as a visiting associate, you are assigned a meaningful module and are responsible for its delivery. It's a long way from fetching coffee, as interns do at some companies.
Q: If you weren’t working at BCG, what would you be doing?
A: Before I learned about consulting, I was very close to becoming a scientist. Right now, I can’t imagine a different place for me. BCG gives you the amazing opportunity to do incredibly interesting things with great people for a very enjoyable compensation—and without most of the administrative pain.
