While I was at college, I dedicated a lot of my time to studying issues related to economic development, specifically in India and Sub-Saharan Africa. Dubai was a good choice for me given its growth and development-oriented work across all industries in the region.
Additionally, living in one of the most politically salient regions in the world, I have not only had the chance to participate in many high-visibility cases but also to challenge myself constantly in new cultural environments. The diversity that Dubai inevitably draws given its pace of development has enabled me to build flexibility in working with and adapting to different cultural and working styles. One of my teams had more than seven nationalities represented during the course of the project!
Ananya holds a bachelor’s degree with high honors from Haverford College in political science and economics.
Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: One of the most interesting parts about this job is that there really isn’t a concept of a typical day. We build an aptitude for planning efficiently on our feet, as things often move much faster than we can control. The closest thing we may get to a typical day is a typical week, which gives us enough flexibility to manage highly volatile situations. A standard weekly schedule might include flying out to the client location on Sunday morning, working there throughout the week, traveling back to Dubai on Wednesday, and working from the Dubai office on Thursday. But within this, anything goes!
Q: What is something that has surprised you about working at BCG?
A: Since day one, I was independent in driving and owning my module. Cases are short, and building trust happens very quickly within a team. My teammates and senior leadership often asked me what my opinion was on a topic and gave me the chance to ask questions so that I could always fully understand the topic at hand. Additionally, I always had opportunities to prove that I could take on more responsibilities as the case progressed. These kinds of experiences have given me confidence at an early stage.
Q: If you weren’t working at BCG, what would you be doing?
A: If I wasn’t at BCG, I’d likely be pursuing a job in the international development space. While in college, I primarily studied issues related to international development (specifically related to poverty alleviation solutions) and was thinking about working in a research or policy role at a US-based think tank. In my senior year of college, I wrote my thesis on the relationship between foreign policy and aid, which is a topic I still try to stay informed about.
