In Annique’s Words

During my internship, my case team comprised a JD/MBA, an ironman athlete with a PhD, a former NFL player, a former CIA analyst, a former Teach For America teacher, and a recent college grad, as well as two interns (a former Navy pilot and me, someone from the retail industry). At first I thought that was unique; now I know that type of diversity is just a regular day at BCG.

Together with a team from our client, we created a completely new go-to-market strategy that revolutionized the way the company sold to customers, helped it sell more, and proactively identified changes in the market.

My internship experience really sums up what I love about working at BCG: we take smart, creative people with diverse backgrounds, embed them into the client organization, and work in partnership with the client to create lasting change.

About Annique

Annique has a degree in Social Studies from Harvard College and an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Prior to joining BCG, she spent four years working for a large US retail company in a variety of strategic and project management roles.


Q: What do you like most about your job?

A: It's really impossible to get bored in this job. As soon as I feel like I'm starting to repeat something, I'm off to a new client with a new problem. Our cases are just long enough that I feel as if I develop an expertise and can really contribute, but short enough that the learning curve never plateaus.

Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?

A: I think it was after my second or third recruiting event on campus at Wharton. I realized that when I was going to a BCG event, I was excited. I didn't feel as if I was at a recruiting event where I was trying to act the way the company wanted. I felt like I was walking into a room full of friends where I could be my own slightly quirky self and was accepted and respected for it.

Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?

A: Truthfully, the main thing I needed to learn was how to hold myself accountable. On my first case, I was staying up very late working each night—not because I had a deadline, but because I kept going, "Wait, what if I try this one more analysis before I go to bed?" My principal sat me down and said, "Look, in this job there will be days when we really need to push, but that's not every day." You need to ask yourself what is and is not necessary, and hold yourself accountable. And at the end of the day, when I maintain balance, I am more innovative and creative than I would be if I worked late each night and didn't unwind on weekends.
