One of my mentors once told me that succeeding at BCG is partly about doing the job but also about shaping the job. I'm grateful that we have an appreciation for the latter here and seek to provide our people with unique experiences.
I joined BCG because I was looking for a place to start my career that would offer dynamic work experiences, a rich team environment, and unmatched growth opportunities. Reflecting on my tenure here thus far, I can honestly say that my decision has continuously been validated.
In short, I've been able to see a wide range of client problems—from the strategy of a payment provider to the pricing of a restaurant's menu. I've been able to work with fantastic teams—from the partners, principals, and project leaders, who actively invest in me, to the other associates and consultants, who always laugh with me. And I've been able to pursue valuable growth opportunities—including temporarily joining a client's organization on secondment and exploring sponsorship for a postgraduate degree. My time with BCG has proven to be the experience I desired.
Ben joined BCG's Chicago office in August 2014. Prior to joining BCG, he attended Indiana University's Kelley School of Business where he received a BS in finance and real estate.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: My biggest learning from my first year at BCG was that my perspective is valued regardless of my tenure. Starting fresh out of undergrad, it can take time to grow accustomed to the role of content expert on your piece of work; however, at BCG you have the opportunity—and you are expected—to voice your opinions. Realizing that my perspective is valued helped me grow in my ability to drive the content of my work and contribute meaningfully to discussions with clients.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: One word that often comes to mind when I think of BCG is customization. We provide our clients with solutions that are tailored to their specific business and, in much the same way, seek to offer a personalized experience to each of our team members. That focus on customization requires us to be curious, think creatively, and embrace diversity. It takes curiosity to want to explore beyond the conventional way of thinking. It takes creativity to arrive at a new way of thinking. And it takes diverse perspectives to fuel creativity.
Q: What are some of your volunteer or charitable work experiences?
A: Since graduating from college, I've been able to volunteer with a few charitable organizations, many of which are related to BCG to some extent. My biggest commitment right now is working as a mentor coach with America Needs You—an organization I first heard about from other BCGers. America Needs You fights for economic mobility for ambitious, first-generation college students by providing transformative mentorship and intensive career development. As a mentor coach, I work one-on-one with one of our college students to shape and plan for his personal and professional goals.
