At BCG, Storytellers synthesize complex information and ideas. They believe in bringing the whole team together to get a broader perspective. Bochao finds clarity in a complex world.
The essence of personal development usually lies in charting one's own course and stepping outside the comfort zone. BCG is capable of creating new and exciting possibilities and helping its people maximize their own growth potential.
For the past decade, I've been seriously exploring my own career interests. I picked microelectronics as college major and published a few patents, moved to the US to study management science hoping to become a business-savvy engineer, started my career in a midsize global consulting firm helping clients determine the best sales and marketing strategies, and finally charted my course to BCG, aspiring to make a real impact and help shape the future.
Now that I’m at BCG, I'm sure my journey of self-exploration will never come to an end. The firm is able to provide sufficient opportunities to satisfy one's intellectual curiosity and fuel personal growth. It is an ideal place to meet the most brilliant talent, solve the most complex problems, create substantial value for the most influential organizations, and take on the toughest social challenges around the globe. These together, in my eyes, make BCG unique.
Bochao holds a bachelor of science degree in microelectronics from Peking University, and a master of engineering management degree from Dartmouth College.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: The best part of working in consulting is that our job can actually drive changes. This sounds easier than it is. Nowadays, to make this possible, not only are consultants required to come up with insightful recommendations but they also need to effectively translate the strategies into implementable plans. BCG, as a visionary pioneer in the consulting industry, has even brought the role of a consultancy up to another level—enabling the clients by helping them establish essential strategic capabilities. This is particularly critical and helpful in today's dynamic competitive environment.
Q: What inspires you about BCG?
A: BCG's thought leadership and emphasis on creating social impact inspire me the most. BCG has been at the forefront of business management since its inception, and many of the firm’s ideas and concepts have had a fundamental impact on the success of many of the world's most important enterprises and organizations. I'm proud to see teams like BCG Henderson Institute carrying on the legacy. In addition, apart from its reputation in the business world, BCG's dedication to shaping a better society and improving people's lives is respect-worthy and inspiring. I personally plan to get involved more with the Social Impact practice in the future.
Q: How have you benefited from a mentoring relationship at BCG?
A: At the farewell dinner of a principal with whom I'd worked for six months, I told her that I appreciated her mentorship and she was way more than just a boss to me. Six months is not a long period, but the impact of some of her career advice has been significant. I still remember her telling me that I should take the initiative in "thinking one to two levels up and go one extra mile" after I forwarded her an e-mail from a senior client and asked for direct instructions on how to reply, and how I should find my defining moments and push myself to speak up more when appropriate in client meetings. Having a role model is key in one's personal development, and I feel so lucky that I can easily find plenty within the BCG community.
