BCG opens an array of doors that I never anticipated—creating opportunities for me to have impact and influence across industries and topics I am passionate about.
When I joined BCG I was immediately drawn to consumer goods and retail, given how easily I could relate to those spaces in my day-to-day life. My initial projects started there but quickly diverged into a mix of industries, including technology, public sector, and financial institutions, as well as a range of topics from supply chain to change management. I was hesitant to venture into these new areas at first, but they all proved to be fascinating and enriching, giving me a solid foundation of experience for my current focus back in the consumer and retail topics that I am most passionate about.
I have always valued the flexibility that BCG offers. It comes in the form of intellectual stimulation from new challenges, the ownership over the problems I'm working on with clients, and the ability to adapt when and where I work from to stay balanced with life at home. It's what keeps this career interesting, rewarding, and sustainable for me.
Brad holds an honors business administration degree from the Ivey Business School at the University of Western Ontario and an MBA from Kellogg School of Management.
Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?
A: I was in my second year as an associate, on the road, working with a tough client, and trying to crack a problem related to the company’s pricing performance. I had spent days thinking about how to frame the issue so everyone could understand what had been happening to their pricing. I'll never forget the moment when I was at dinner doodling on a napkin and thinking about pricing in totally unrelated industries when I finally connected the dots on how to show the issue. I showed my team the next morning, and then the clients and everyone loved it. I followed that up with the supporting analysis—and it all made sense and was informative. To this day, it's my favorite career moment.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: Confidence and humility. It can be intimidating to take on new challenges every week, and it takes a special mix of those two traits to share your ideas and respectfully challenge clients while being open to feedback and direction from other BCGers and clients to get the complete picture and a pragmatic solution.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: I spend most of my time outside of work with my family. I have two young children, so spending time with them and my wife is incredibly fun and important to me. At work, I use PTO (predictability, teaming, and open communication) to stay disciplined about when I am actively online or taking meetings and when I'm shutting down to focus on family. I also expose my kids to what I do at work so it's not a mystery to them and they appreciate where I am and what I'm doing when I'm at the office.
