Managing Director & Partner, Calgary
At BCG, Advocates are thoughtful and engaged. They listen closely because they believe that the best solutions can be discovered in the most unexpected places. Darwin goes deep to understand challenges.
I never cease to be amazed by the genuine, personal mentorship that leaders at BCG provide. It is simply the best place to grow in your career.
My background is engineering and operations in the oil and gas industry. I used to design and drill oil wells around the world. Like many engineers, I was torn between developing more technical expertise or broadening my career and skill set. At that time, one of BCG's main recruiting promises was the ability to "chart your own course"—which was a theme that very much resonated with me. It was an easy decision to join BCG after my MBA.
BCG has absolutely delivered on its promise. I have had the opportunity to explore different industries, functions, and geographies. Most notably, BCG created the opportunity for me move to Calgary to help build our presence in Western Canada at a point in time when we did not have a formal office setup and a limited client base. The willingness to invest in me so that I could help forge a path for a new office really set BCG apart.
Darwin holds a BSc in mechanical engineering from the University of Calgary and an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. He is a professional engineer and joined BCG after about six years of working in engineering and operational management roles in the oil and gas industry.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: Without outstanding execution, even world class insight does not drive impact. We are at our best when we make pragmatic, insightful recommendations by working closely with our clients from ideation to implementation.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: The investment that BCG as a firm has put in me has been tremendous. But the biggest impact has come in the form of the close, personal relationships I have built within the firm. I cannot imagine an environment where I could get the same level of direct coaching and mentorship that I receive here. Even after many years, I feel as if I continue to learn and develop each day.
Q: What international experiences have been the most interesting for you?
A: I have been fortunate to have had a number of international experiences with BCG. One of my most interesting was on a project with a Korean company. The orchestration around major meetings was something I had never seen with Western clients; everything had a meaning from my seating location to the sequence in which I spoke. I will also never forget my translator distilling everything I said into a fraction of the length; I presume he relayed everything!
