I value BCG because it has created an environment that lets good ideas flourish—and also because it taught me that change takes a lot more than just good ideas.
My intellectual curiosity led me to science, which led me to a PhD in medical sciences. I joined BCG to learn new ways to apply this curiosity to solving problems in new and varied disciplines. At BCG, I’ve worked on a range of topics, from commercial strategy to R&D strategy to partnership strategy to how to design an organization—all while staying close to my background by working with health care clients.
BCG is a place where good ideas can thrive; that is what we are here to do. We are relied on to work with our clients to bring the best solutions and translate them into action. The most surprising thing about BCG for me was learning how challenging and satisfying it can be to translate ideas into change for our clients. I joined looking for an opportunity to work on interesting problems and have since learned how to turn problem solving into real change.
David holds a PhD in medical sciences from the University of Toronto, where he studied stem cells and neuroregeneration.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: I learned that an idea only gets you so far. It takes time, effort, thought, and collaboration to bring the needed detail and clarity to the idea—and it takes a whole other set of tools and skills to make the idea a reality. It is this latter area that was the most challenging for me when I first joined, and getting better at it has revolutionized what I can accomplish.
Q: What was one of your favorite case experiences?
A: We were brought in to help our client develop a strategy in a given disease area. Our task was to deeply understand the latest science, the commercial landscape, and the company’s capabilities to provide a plan for the next ten years. We were working with people at the client who were the absolute world experts in each of these three areas. It was a real challenge to walk in and help bring this group to a strategy that was better than what they already had planned. By working closely with them, by challenging their preconceived ideas, and by integrating across these disciplines, we were able to provide real insights that made a meaningful difference to our client.
Q: What are some of your favorite places in the world and why?
A: During my time at BCG, I’ve had the opportunity to travel to Japan several times. It is a truly unique experience. It is an incredible and fascinating country. The people I’ve met and worked with there have been wonderful, and they have a view and approach to life that always pushes me to think differently. And, of course, the food is amazing.
