James Is a Dynamic Ally

BCG supported my growth by sending me to the Copenhagen office for a year and sponsoring my MBA.

In James’s Words

I studied economics and political science at university. At BCG I’ve been able to follow my interest in government by working predominantly for BCG’s Public Sector practice in both Victoria and Canberra. But I’ve also been able to work in the private sector and have been fortunate enough to do so overseas. One of my favorite projects was working for a consumer goods company in the US and Canada. I’ve also spent a year working out of the Copenhagen office and supported the launch of BCG’s Centre for Public Impact in London.

BCG has supported my professional development. Whether it’s another associate or consultant helping you out with Excel shortcuts or your manager pushing you beyond your comfort zone, BCG challenges you to be your best self.

About James

James holds a bachelor of arts from the University of Melbourne, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and an MPP from Harvard Kennedy School.

Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?

A: I was fresh out of undergrad and knew little about the workplace or business. On my first project, my colleagues were very supportive, despite the hideous slides I produced! With their active support, I improved not only my analytical skills but was also given opportunities to lead client interactions. I easily learned more in my first year than throughout the entirety of my undergraduate degree.

Q: What are some of your favorite things to do outside the office?

A: I’m a political current affairs junkie, more inclined to check Politico than my Facebook feed. I have a bunch of Yotam Ottolenghi cookbooks and am slowly working my way through the recipes. The cauliflower cake is my current favorite. I also am a long-suffering supporter of the Melbourne Demons.

Q: How has your network grown as part of working at BCG?

A: One of the best parts of working at BCG has been the LGBT network. Each year, the LGBT network holds a conference that has allowed me to meet BCGers from all over the globe. This has not only left me with a supportive professional network but also friends in just about any city I travel to.
