IT Manager, San Francisco
At BCG, Challengers go against expected thinking and inspire their teams to be truly innovative. Jared goes deep to understand challenges.
One thing I’ve learned in my career is that a company is only as good as its people. Further, the people you work with have a direct and powerful impact on how you feel about your job. I can honestly say I’ve never worked with people more intelligent, hardworking, cheerful, creative, and thoughtful than at BCG.
Though I went to school for music composition, I always had a strong affinity toward technology. Prior to joining BCG, I worked for a medium-size consumer electronics company, and while the business was interesting, I felt a bit stuck in my role. When an opportunity opened up in BCG’s Chicago office, I jumped at it.
Since joining back in 2010, BCG has grown considerably—and so have I! It was most surprising to see just how much BCG invests in its people. From mentorship programs to tuition reimbursement to management training and workshops, the opportunities to grow and chart your own course are endless.
Jared holds a BA in music from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a graduate certificate in information systems management from Keller Graduate School. Jared has spent almost 20 years working in the IT service industry.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: Leading a team of fun, smart, and motivated individuals and fostering growth in them. I enjoy helping them plot their respective courses for their careers as well as showing them new paths they may not have previously considered.
Q: What did you learn in your first year on the job?
A: The pace at BCG was an adjustment from my previous position. BCG’s high overall expectations pushed me to find solutions and process information more quickly than I had ever done before. It was a tough challenge, but when I finally got my feet under me, I felt an empowering sense of accomplishment.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: When I came to BCG, I felt I had just about seen and done it all in the world of IT support. But I was also uncertain of my next move and lacked a true direction. BCG challenged me in ways I never would have expected. Those challenges, along with some terrific mentorship, pushed me and encouraged my applying to a management role in a different office. I ended up landing the role—something I undoubtedly could not have done without the support I received from my manager and peers. Four years later, I can honestly say it was the best, most exciting career move I’ve ever made!
