I have always valued BCG’s respect for, and commitment to, the individual; we are never “put in a box” or defined by the role that we’re in—rather by our skills and contributions. Because of that, we have the opportunity to pursue a variety of options, and my career has certainly reflected that.
Before I joined BCG, I thought I was going to become an investment banker. To be honest, the only reason I considered consulting was because that’s what the top students in my program pursued—investment banking and consulting—so I thought I shouldn’t limit my options to just one. As I went through the interview processes and better understood the development opportunities that each path would afford, it became clear to me that consulting was the direction I wanted to go and BCG was the firm I wanted to join. Fortunately, that option was offered to me. Little did I know then that that would be the beginning of a career that would span consulting, practice area operations, e-commerce research, and consultant recruiting, exposing me to more growth and variety of experience than I could have ever imagined.
My current role is global in scope, yet I’m able to do it from my home city and office, Toronto. To be able to stay close to family and friends and retain affiliation with my home office, all of which is very important to me, while having the opportunity to impact BCG on a firm-wide basis, has been incredible. Build. Connect. Grow. is not simply a catchy tagline, it’s the promise we make to our staff, and I feel my own experience is proof that we live up to it.
Before her role as global consulting recruiting director, Julie worked in local recruiting, in the global e-commerce sector with a focus on proprietary research and operations, and as an associate. Julie graduated with a bachelor of commerce degree from Queen’s University.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I don’t think it’s possible to name just one thing that I like most about my job, but if I had to it would actually be that there are many reasons why I like my job—and not everyone can say that. I feel empowered to make a difference, and I value the confidence that is placed in me. I work with tremendously smart, caring, and dedicated people, many of whom have become personal friends. I have had the opportunity to visit places and share experiences I might never have otherwise done. I am respected and rewarded for my contributions. I have senior staff who I consider mentors, and I am privileged to mentor others. I could go on and on. I have built a career at BCG, and each job along the way has afforded me tremendous personal and professional growth opportunities all within a culture I have come to respect and value and have done my best to uphold.
Q: What characteristics do you believe define a BCGer?
A: On the surface, we are very eclectic; you couldn’t necessarily “spot” a BCGer in the room, and that’s something I value about BCG. That said, there is definitely something that unifies us. No matter which office I visit (and I’ve visited many), I always feel at home because I have found there are certain qualities that are inherent to a BCGer: respect for the individual, a commitment to do good, a desire to help others succeed, and a spirit of cooperation.
Q: What’s the biggest impact you have had with your work?
A: I’ve had the opportunity to have several roles at BCG—in consulting, one of our practice areas, local recruiting, and now global recruiting—and each has afforded me different opportunities and thus different ways to contribute. Where I have experienced some of my greatest personal satisfaction has been in recruiting. We are a people business, and I’ve been able to influence who joins our firm. I feel that I am a gatekeeper of our culture and our future, and I take that responsibility very seriously. And it’s not only BCG that is impacted, but also those we hire. Their lives are forever enriched by the opportunities and relationships they experience here. Having the opportunity to set all of that in motion is a privilege.
