Partner & Managing Director; Global Leader, Technology Advantage Practice, London
At BCG, Seekers go deep into the challenging issues our clients face. Their curiosity empowers our teams to facilitate change and add value to society. Karalee has the courage to take action.
BCG has been an incredible place to grow and develop. I have had the opportunity to create a rewarding career in a firm with an entrepreneurial, collaborative, and industry-shaping spirit. At the same time, BCG has supported me with a variety of working models so that I can be a present and involved mother of my two wonderful children.
My background is in health informatics—and my passion is in the use of technology and data to improve health care. I joined BCG for the opportunity to learn and develop both personally and professionally. Early in my career, BCG provided me with the opportunity to experience different industries, to see more of the business environment in different geographies, and to work with very talented people. In my current role, I lead BCG's focus on digital and technology advantage in health care. The entrepreneurial aspects of partnership at BCG provide a unique experience. After more than 15 years here, I am constantly learning new things!
My career at BCG has given me an unparalleled experience. I have worked in Paris, New York, and London, with clients in a wide variety of industries, from health care to media and entertainment. I've gained experience with a wide range of business challenges, including postmerger integration, growth, organization, and technology and digital. When I look back at these experiences, I'm most proud of the impact and value our teams were able to create for our clients. I believe we truly make a difference by shaping industries, helping our clients to create lasting value, and building new capabilities within organizations.
At BCG, there's always something to learn, a place to grow, and a team environment that encourages personal development. I've really appreciated our flexible working models. I have worked part-time for the past ten years and balance a rewarding career with being a present and involved mother of two children.
Karalee holds a Bachelor of Science degree in health information science from University of Victoria and an MBA from University of Toronto (both with distinction). Before BCG, she worked for eight years in hospital management.
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: I've grown at BCG more than I could ever have dreamed of—from the Ambassador program where I worked in Paris for a year, to working in different industries on a wide variety of business problems, to a flexible working schedule, which has enabled me to be more involved with my children. Constant feedback, supportive leaders, and a wide variety of highly effective teams have taught me so much about my own style and my development.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: I am a mother of two children. Over the years, BCG has enabled me to change my working model from full-time to a range of flexible working models that have enabled me to continue to develop my career and at the same time spend high-quality and regular time with my small children. As my needs changed, I have found BCG to be a supportive and flexible environment that rewards impact and results instead of time in the office.
Q: Why is BCG a good place for a woman to work?
A: Women are excellent consultants! BCG supports our development through a variety of formal and informal mechanisms. The single biggest factor for me has been around creating innovative and supportive flexible working models, which have enabled me to take time off, extend my maternity leaves, and also work part-time. As a woman, I feel that I'm a valued member of the firm's leadership.
