Managing Director & Partner, Brussels
At BCG, Challengers go against expected thinking and inspire their teams to be truly innovative. Karolien seeks a new perspective.
Day after day, I am inspired by the diversity that BCG offers—both in terms of projects to work on and teams to work together with.
My first experience at BCG was a one-month internship. From day one, I was part of the team. I was impressed by the great support I received from my mentor and project leader, who answered all my questions. What struck me most, however, was the engagement of all team members going the extra mile to make change happen for the client.
Now, as a principal, I am still impressed by the reach of my work. I attend meetings with top executives of insurance companies, discussing the strategic choices to make in order to strengthen and build a future-proof and winning market positioning. It is very rewarding afterwards to see how those organizations are changing effectively.
Karolien holds a business engineering degree from KULeuven, where she graduated summa cum laude.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: It is hard to pinpoint the one thing that really makes my job unique and worthwhile. I see at least three key elements that I love about my job. First of all, there is the intellectual challenge: the high variety of projects, the opportunity to work on the client’s most complex and challenging topics, and the development of new perspectives and innovative solutions. Second, I highly value the focus we have on generating impact for our clients. In every client case we do, there is a strong focus on implementation and pragmatism. Last but not least, I enjoy the discussions with the different management teams and CEOs. It is highly inspiring to discuss with them future strategies for their business—and also very rewarding to see how our clients grow afterwards.
Q: What inspires you about BCG?
A: I am inspired by the diversity that BCG offers—both in terms of projects to work on and teams to work together with. The variety of topics that I work on—including designing a future-proof omnichannel strategy, developing an innovative health care insurance offering, and optimizing some of our clients’ core processes. Also the people that I work with at BCG inspire me: the senior partners and partners on the team that provide guidance leveraging their deep expertise and the multiple associates and consultants with a broad variety of backgrounds. Every project means a new team—and that is highly enriching!
Q: What is something that has surprised you about working at BCG?
A: I was definitely surprised by the strong teamwork at BCG. Experts and teams all over the world partner to bring the best expertise to our clients and have the most impact. I was also not expecting the depth of expertise available—not only in our office but worldwide—and the great enthusiasm for bringing this knowledge and experience to our clients by always setting up a dedicated team for a specific topic. Working on a project involves real teamwork. Everyone is highly motivated to work together to create the solution. It is fun during office hours but definitely also outside the office—having a drink together.
