BCG teams never cease to amaze me. One learns very quickly that a small group of committed individuals can solve super-hard problems.
I’m an engineer by training, but from day one BCG made me tackle problems in a variety of topics and industries. This was made possible by combining trust in my abilities as a consultant with BCG’s support in helping me develop the skills needed to advance in my career.
This development of skills came in many forms throughout my career at BCG, including initial skills training and weekly sessions on Fridays, as well as international training and allocations plus MBA sponsorship. This is a reflection of how much BCG values each of its consultants as well as the firm’s commitment to delivering top-quality work to our clients.
Ricardo earned an MBA with distinction from London Business School and holds electrical and production engineering degrees from the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio).
Q: When did you know you belonged at BCG?
A: On the very first day of my very first case as an associate, I was invited to join a meeting with the client. The partner wanted me to get as much context as possible for my assignment. After that meeting, we had a debrief session on what it meant for our case, and we discussed the path forward. The key word here is “discussed.” The partner wanted my opinion, and we arrived at an approach we both liked. I knew right then that I was very much part of the team and that my opinion mattered more than my tenure.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: I believe in striving to keep both my personal and work interests in balance on a day-to-day basis. A typical day thus starts with either a tennis class or a running session, followed by going to the client’s office, where I have meetings with the BCG team and clients on the various work fronts we have open in our project. After that, I head home to cook dinner with my wife followed by a choice of activities including reading, watching a movie, gaming, or doing my guitar “homework.”
Q: How has BCG helped you grow and succeed?
A: BCG has provided me with great opportunities for development. For instance, I had a one-year assignment in our Houston office to help further my skills in serving our Energy practice. This happened on the back of my MBA studies, sponsored by BCG. Those experiences helped me grow immensely as a professional and set me up well for the transition to management roles at BCG.
