Senior Associate, Johannesburg
At BCG, Innovators view the world from unexpected angles. They bring creativity and a fresh perspective to every challenge they face. Saravanan challenges the status quo.
The best part of working at BCG is that you get to map your own career. Whether you want to try out different industries & functions to find out what it is you actually like, or building expertise and expanding your network in an industry that you’d like to focus on – BCG truly empowers you to define your own career path.
Having studied Mechatronic & Systems engineering, I started my career working in the Oil & Gas industry. But after two years, I was looking for a new challenge to break the monotony of my 9-5 job. When the opportunity to work at BCG came around – I jumped at it! In the short time I have been here, BCG has exposed me to a number of industries outside of engineering – from retail to the public healthcare.
What makes BCG truly unique is our collaborative approach to problem solving. It’s never a case of you having to solve the problem on your own, but rather bouncing ideas within the team, or leveraging global experts. We are also extremely integrated within the client teams, which allows us to quickly get to answers that both add value and are sustainable in the long term.
Saravanan holds a degree in Mechatronic engineering from the University of Cape Town and a Masters in Systems engineering from Lancaster University.
Q: What do you like most about your job?
A: I really like the fact that every day at BCG is vastly different from the day before. We work with clients from a range of industries and are always faced with new types of problems to solve. My learning curve has been incredibly steep over the last year – which is exactly what I’m looking for at this stage of my career. For someone who gets bored very easily, working at BCG has really kept me on my toes.
Q: Why did you choose to work at BCG?
A: After deciding I needed a new challenge, I was looking for something that would both excite me and equip me with the skills to help me succeed in developing my own business one day. This quickly led me to the strategy consulting industry – and specifically to a handful of firms. What made BCG stand out for me was that it has an amazing reputation of creating huge value for its clients, while also really looking after and developing its consultants. I found BCG Johannesburg particularly appealing as it is a small but rapidly growing office and I wanted to be part of growing it into something special.
Q: What is something that has surprised you about working at BCG?
A: I was told before joining that I would be working with some high caliber people, but I have been truly blown away by just how amazing my colleagues actually are. Regardless of what type of problem I am trying to solve, there is always someone at the office who is an “expert” and very willing to help. It’s been great to have intellectual discussions, or even shoot the breeze, with some of the country’s future thought leaders.
