I joined BCG in 2015 as an experienced hire. Before BCG, I worked for a national oil company across roles in corporate strategy and upstream petroleum economics. While I enjoyed working in the industry, I had a nagging desire to explore new territory and challenge myself further.
BCG has given me the opportunity to do just that. Our clients do not hire us to work on "business as usual." We are tasked to work on the industry's most complex problems and push the envelope on current ways of thinking.
Thus far, I have continued to focus on the energy sector. BCG has allowed me to strengthen my understanding of the industry—to an even greater level of rigor and depth compared with when I was part of the industry. In a short span of time, I have worked across drilling and completions, facilities engineering and supply chain functions—all core parts of any oil and gas company. The exposure to these facets of the industry has been priceless, and it would never have happened if it wasn't for BCG.
Stefanie holds a BSc in Mathematics and Economics from the LSE and an MBA from INSEAD.
Q: Why did you choose to work at BCG?
A: One of my first encounters with BCG was during my MBA program, when Xavier Mosquet, a senior partner in BCG's automotive sector, spoke at the school. Xavier had previously advised the Obama administration on restructuring General Motors and Chrysler. As he talked through the ideas BCG had brought to the table and the results they had achieved, I remember feeling like a light had turned on in my head and thinking to myself, “That's exactly what I want to do!"
Q: What was one of your favorite case experiences?
A: In October 2015, Southeast Asia was engulfed in a thick haze from the forest fires in Indonesia. Flights across the region were delayed or canceled indefinitely. I was working with a client who was based in the thick of the haze. It was very important that we worked alongside the client during that particular stage of the project. So while most people were avoiding travel in the area, a bunch of crazy BCG consultants were trying to get in. Logistics was, of course, a major problem—how does one get to the client site if the airport has shut down? What was usually a 50-minute plane ride for some of us turned into a 15-hour car journey or a 4-hour boat ride. This was a memorable experience because it showed how the whole team came together to support the client. It also built a great deal of camaraderie among the team. The experience of constantly refreshing our phones for air pollution index updates, putting on heavy-duty face masks and rushing to book flights the moment news broke that the airport was open—was a great adventure we all shared.
Q: What’s your home office environment like?
A: The Kuala Lumpur office is extremely close-knit. While many of us work outside of the city, everyone makes an effort to be back at the office on Fridays. The last Friday of every month is home office day (HOD), and it's always a great feeling to be back in KL for this. The entire office (partners, consultants, business support staff, and our favorite tea lady) catches up over lunch, shares BCG-related updates, and celebrates promotions and birthdays.
