At BCG, Allies bring a sense of collaboration and excitement to their teams. They create an atmosphere of trust and support in which people can do their best work. Tom finds clarity in a complex world.
The magic of BCG is that you never stop growing, because this place never stops stretching you.
My passion for the work we do at BCG stems from two things: possibilities and people.
We create possibilities for our clients when we tear apart a difficult problem—maybe one that has been a stumbling block for years—to identify what's truly standing in the way. Then we work to craft solutions—paths that our clients can follow to get where they want to go. I know we've succeeded in this when our clients say things like, "We couldn't have gotten here without your help," and I find this tremendously energizing.
Even more important is that our work is deeply personal. We help our team members and clients achieve their goals and in the process forge connections that last well beyond the end of the engagement. A great example of this is a relationship I built with a client CEO during a short growth strategy project. We were able to help him understand his business more clearly at a critical moment and earned his trust in the process. Long after the end of the project, we remain in touch on a personal level, getting dinner and sharing advice.
Tom holds a degree from Yale University, where he majored in economics and environmental studies.
Q: What is a typical day like for you?
A: There is no typical day at BCG, but all of my days revolve around people: my team, my partner group, and my clients. I spend time with my team to hear what they are learning and what it means, help them think through the implications and their next steps, and tell corny jokes and laugh a lot in the team room. I spend time with my partner group to share updates, test my thinking, and get feedback. And I spend time with my clients to keep my finger on the pulse of what they are worrying about, how BCG can help, and what our next steps should be.
Q: How do you maintain a sustainable career balance at BCG?
A: It's all about setting boundaries and sticking to them. For example, I have a personal pledge not to work on the weekends. Instead I fill my weekends with fun adventures, time with friends and family, and lots of opportunities to exercise and get outdoors. These activities give me energy and a renewed focus as I start off each workweek. Do I make an exception once in a while? Of course, but it really is a rarity.
Q: What trends are you following and why?
A: I'm very passionate about supply chain and logistics topics, so I am following automation and big data trends closely. Our ability to predict demand and proactively move materials around the world is becoming increasingly sophisticated and is creating a lot of opportunities for our clients to innovate their business models and find new ways to surprise and delight their customers.
