BCG Acquires Digital Design and Innovation Lab MAYA

Acquisition Will Help Management Consulting Leader Bring World-Class Design and R&D Expertise to Clients, Creating Greater Value and Impact

PITTSBURGH—The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), one of the world’s leading management consulting firms, announced today that it has acquired the assets of MAYA Design, a digital design and innovation lab based in Pittsburgh. The acquisition will broaden and deepen BCG’s digital offerings and capabilities, especially those related to digital transformation.

“To meet our clients’ ambitious transformation and growth agendas, we are expanding our offer with an even fuller set of digital services,” said Tom Reichert, global leader of digital and analytics at BCG and chair of its practice areas. “This acquisition will enhance our ability to bring top-notch digital design and R&D capabilities to our clients, enabling us to deliver even greater value and impact.”

For nearly 30 years, MAYA has helped organizations grow and succeed by using human-centered design to solve complex business problems at the intersection of human experience and technology. Founded in 1989 by three Carnegie Mellon University professors, it has approximately 30 employees. Specific offerings include alpha and beta prototyping, research to MVP (minimum viable product) delivery, digital product innovation, proprietary IP development, UX and UI design, market research to validate business concepts, and customer journeys.

MacDonald will join BCG as a digital director. MAYA’s three founders—Peter Lucas, Joe Ballay, and Mickey McManus—will become BCG senior advisors.

BCG’s digital activities—in innovation, transformation, and advanced analytics—have grown substantially in recent years. In addition to enlarging its Technology Advantage practice, the firm has created or expanded business units including BCG Digital Ventures, its digital innovation, incubation, and investment arm; BCG Platinion, its IT architecture and solutions unit; and BCG Gamma, providing advanced analytics and data science services.

MAYA’s Pittsburgh office will give BCG a new location to grow and recruit top digital talent, leveraging MAYA’s strong ties to the local universities and tech community.
