Boston Consulting Group’s Enhanced Offering to Help Clients Build and Operate Digital Ecosystems Boosts Ranking by ALM Intelligence
BOSTON—Boston Consulting Group (BCG) was named a leading joint venture and alliances provider in a report by ALM Intelligence. The independent report, titled The ALM Vanguard: Joint Ventures and Alliances Consulting 2019, ranked BCG among the firms that “are at the top of the market in terms of capabilities to create client impact through depth of expertise and ability to deploy it across a range of engagement models.”
BCG was singled out for its “potent, full joint-venture life-cycle offering” and its “strong block-and-tackle operations and strategy areas,” in the ALM Intelligence report, which assessed providers on three key dimensions: “overall capability depth,” “breadth,” and “client impact.” The report also noted that BCG has “substantially enhanced” its offering over the past two years through its advisory work on digital ecosystems.
A Comprehensive, End-to-End Offering
“We have created one of the world’s most comprehensive, end-to-end offerings for joint ventures and alliances, from helping partners define their strategic vision to operating the partnership throughout its life cycle,” said Konrad von Szczepanski, a BCG managing director and partner who leads the firm’s work in joint ventures.
BCG has extensive experience in alliances and joint ventures in both emerging and developed markets across the world, in a broad range of industries. Since 2014, the firm has advised nearly 500 joint ventures, alliances, and partnerships in North America, Europe, Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, in sectors spanning industrial goods, consumer, energy, financial services, health care, and technology.
The report noted that consulting providers that have positioned themselves around joint-venture and alliance life cycles are in especially high demand among companies seeking to achieve growth in a rapidly evolving global business environment characterized by “continuing uncertainty around trade policies, tax issues, politics, and a looming recession.” Leaders such as BCG are “unique in their ability to independently execute a broad array of problems across the full spectrum of client contexts,” ALM Intelligence reported.
Strategy, Management, and Tools Among Key Strengths
The report said that BCG is particularly strong in needs assessment, strategy, operating systems, project management, and enabling tools. The firm’s comprehensive offering includes help in initial setup, definition of business strategy, establishment of governance systems, organizational development, intellectual property protection, and establishment of control over functions such as R&D, supply chain management, production, and sales and marketing.
The firm’s capabilities include a comprehensive methodology for each stage of the joint venture’s life cycle, proprietary data and tools, and a best-in-class global network of joint-venture experts. The BCG TXN Transaction Center serves as the firm’s support hub for transactions such as joint ventures, IPOs, and mergers, and acquisitions.

BCG has strengthened its market position by developing an end-to-end offering to help companies build and collaborate through digital ecosystems. Since the beginning of 2017 alone, BCG has supported clients on five continents on more than 100 projects involving digital ecosystems. The report noted that digital ecosystems, which can comprise hundreds of partners and often include joint ventures, alliances, and acquisitions, help “clients build and achieve the digital capabilities they need.”
